The Past Perfect Continuous is formed with the auxiliary to be in the Past Perfect + the Present Participle.
USAGE
The Past Perfect Continuous is used to denote:
an action which began in the past and continued for a period of time up to another action in the past: When I came home, my mother had been cooking dinner for more than two hours.
an action of certain duration which had a visible result in the past: When the boys came into the house, one had a black eye. They had been fighting.

The following time expressions can be used with the Past Perfect Continuous: for (used with the period of time), since (used with the beginning of the period of time)
