5. The Complex Subject
5.1. Translate into Russian paying attention to the Complex Subject.
A) 1. He is said to be an honest man. 2. Clyde was expected to arrive at the week-end. 3. Many new text-books are expected to be published soon. 4. The man was seen to take off his coat. 5. The number of unemployed is reported to be increasing with every year. 6. His invention is considered to be of great importance. 7. You are supposed to graduate in four years. 8. Many books are known to be published in our country every year.
B) 1. His office turned out to be in one of the back streets. 2. This appeared to amuse the policeman. 3. Money just doesn’t happen to interest me. 4. Clyde seemed to have been thinking of no one else but Sondra since their last meeting. 5. The new methods of work appear to be very effective. 6. Irving turned out to be a long, pale-faced fellow. 7. She doesn’t seem to want to do anything I suggest. 8. You can easily get in through the window if the door happens to be locked.
C) 1. He is sure to be back soon. 2. She is not likely to change her opinion. 3. This new course of treatment is sure to help your grandmother. 4. You are sure to be there tomorrow night, aren’t you? 5. The article is likely to appear in the next issue of the journal. 6. These two young people are sure to be very good friends.
5.2. Paraphrase the following sentences using the Complex Subject with the infinitive.
A) 1. He saw those three return together from the other. 2. We know him to have been a very witty man. 3. It is known that Jack is good at painting. 4. It is believed that he is very clever. 5. They say that he is the best teacher at our school. 6. It is believed that John has arrived in London.
B) 1. It seemed that he didn’t notice that I was in outdoor clothes. 2. It appeared that John was talking to her. 3. It happened that his father came. 4. It happened that I saw them at the theatre. 5. It seems that you know a lot about his problems. 6. It appeared that they were coming down when I left the room. 7. It turned out that my prediction was correct.
C) 1. It was likely that he had hidden my journal under his mattress. 2. It is sure that he will give us some useful information. 3. It is unlikely that he will come and see us soon.
5.3. Translate into English.
1. Говорят, он лучший доктор в нашем городе. 2. Видели, как он перевернул страницу и начал читать. 3. По-видимому, он собирается стать инженером. 4. Оказалось, что я его хорошо знаю. 5. Казалось, что они его совсем забыли. 6. Вероятно, она была единственным человеком, который останется здесь навсегда. 7. Очень вероятно, что они будут благодарить меня за эту помощь. 8. Кажется, вы много знаете об этом городе. 9. Случилось так, что меня не было дома, когда он звонил. 10. Слышали, как он играл на рояле, и что-то пел? 11. Случилось так, что я сказал, что вы знаете его. 12. Он, кажется, также помогает и другим студентам. 13. По-видимому, она согласилась поехать на экскурсию по городу. 14.
