The Past Progressiv Passive

1.9. Make the following sentences passive according to the pattern.

Pattern: When I came, they were still asking questions.

When I came, the questions were still being asked.

1. When she came, her husband was doing the washing. 2. The lesson was almost over, but the teacher was still explaining the new rule to them. 3. When Father came home, I was cooking dinner. 4. At that moment they were examining a new car. 5. As we were passing their garden, he was watering the flowers. 6. When I returned, the workmen were still building a new road not far from my house. 7. When I came home, they were still putting books on the shelves. 8. When the guests arrived, they were still making preparations to meet them.

The Present Perfect Passive

1.10. Put the sentences into the Passive Voice.

1. Someone has taken his bike. 2. They have already paid him for that work. 3. He has made several mistakes in his work. 4. Have you done all the washing? 5. They have left their money at home. 6. Somebody has left the door open. 7. They've opened a new bar not far from here. 8. No one has lived in that house for many years.

1.11. Use the Present Perfect Active or the Present Perfect Passive instead of the infinitives in brackets.

1. The old fireplace (to replace) in this room recently. 2. The cartoon character Mickey Mouse (to create) by Walt Disney. 3. Where you (to find) this dog? It’s so dirty. 4. You (to invite) to the party? 5. John Kennedy (to assassinate) in Dallas in 1963. 6. The thief (to take) only money. The diamonds (not to take). 7. When the television (to invent)? Mrs. Jones (to leave) her door open last week, and her house (to break into). 11. No books (to ask for) recently. 12. No mistakes (to make) in this work.

The Past Perfect Passive

1.12. Brian came home last night and found that his flat had been broken into. He made a list for the police describing all the things that had happened. Make up sentences using the Past Perfect Passive according to the pattern.

Pattern: Clothes / throw on the floor.

When Brian came home, he found that his clothes had been thrown on the floor.

The list of words:

The Future Perfect Passive

1.13. Make up sentences using the Future Perfect Passive according to the pattern.

Pattern: By the time you get there (everything / to do).

By the time you get there everything will have been done.

1. By next year (this house / to reconstruct). 2. By 3 p.m. (my work / to finish) already. 3. I hope by winter (this road / to repair). 4. I think by tomorrow the question (to settle). 5. By the time you come back (the flat / to tidy up). 6. By next summer (the swimming pool / to build) in this street. 7. (The supper / to cook) by the time the children come from school.

1.14. The Present Simple Passive or the Present Progressive Passive.

1. We (to give) a lot of advice by our parents. 2. Lots of people (to operate on) in this clinic. And now unfortunately my uncle John (to operate on) here. 3. All the contracts (to sign) by the President. 4. You can’t use the fax now, it (to fix). 5. Our luggage (to examine) at the customs now. Any luggage going abroad (to check) usually here. 6. Papers (to deliver) usually in time, they (to look through) at the moment and you’ll get yours soon. 7. You’ll have your copy soon, the contract (to type).

1.15. The Past Simple Passive or the Past Progressive Passive.

1. The helicopter (to contract) in Russia. 2. The exposition (to open) when we drove up to the picture gallery. 3. The petrol tank (to fill) last week. 4. They (to award) the highest prize. 5. When I came into the kitchen, I smelt something delicious. My favourite cookies (to bake) in the oven. 6. The naughty boy (to teach) a very good lesson by his friends. 7. He couldn’t go out as his suit and shirt (to clean). 8. She was watching TV while dinner (to prepare). 9. I drove up to the shop just as it (to close), but the owner was kind enough to let me in. 10. His cousins (to fine) for exceeding speed limit yesterday.

1.16. The Past Simple Passive or the Present Perfect Passive.

1. The decorations (to complete) an hour ago. 2. He (not to see) for a week already. 3. The paper (not to read) by anyone yet. 4. I’m happy as I just (to allow) to stay here for an extra day. 5. The suit (not to wear) for a long time. 6. The motorist (to disqualify) 5 months ago. 7. I can’t believe my eyes! My book (to publish) already. 8. She (to teach) music in her childhood. 9. You ever (to teach) how to play chess? 10. I just (to advise) to keep to a diet.

1.17. Translate into English.

a) 1. Когда обсуждался этот вопрос? 2. Такие вопросы часто обсуждаются на наших собраниях. 3. Этот вопрос уже обсудили. 4. Какой вопрос сейчас обсуждается? 5. Когда я пришла, этот вопрос уже обсуждался. 6. Когда статья будет написана, ее поместят в газете. 7. Рассказ уже написан? 8. Эта работа была написана до того, как была прочитана очень интересная книга. 9. В Москве сейчас строится много новых домов. 10. Когда мы переехали сюда, неподалеку строилось несколько домов. 11. На этой площади будет построен новый дом. 12. Этот дом был построен до войны. 13. Эта школа только что построена. Осенью в ней начнутся занятия.

b) 1. Работа только что закончена. 2. Доклад слушали очень внимательно. 3. Его вчера нигде не видели. 4. Телеграмма будет получена только завтра. 5. На этой улице строится новая станция метро. 6. Когда была написана эта статья. 7. Его попросили принять участие в концерте. 8. Об этом фильме много говорят. 9. Вас просят к телефону. 10. В детстве ее учили музыке. 11. Письмо еще не отправили. 12. Над вами будут смеяться, если вы это скажете. 13. Эта книга переведена на русский язык. 14. Ей посоветовали написать доклад по-английски.

c) 1. За ним послали 20 минут назад. Он должен скоро прийти. 2. Этот вопрос сегодня обсуждаться не будет. 3. Домой они пришли поздно, все двери уже были закрыты. 4. Я уверена, что вам помогут в этой работе. 5. Когда я приехала в Омск, этот дом еще строился. 6. Эта книга была уже распродана. 7. Когда Мэри вернулась, дома никого уже не было. 8. Как только вещи были уложены, послали за машиной. 9. Этого лектора всегда слушают с интересом. 10. Я почувствовала, что на меня смотрят. 11. Пока варили ужин, мальчики сидели и разговаривали. 12. Больного не будут оперировать без согласия.
