8.1. State the function of the Participle II. Translate the sentences into Russian.

1. The answer to this was unexpected. 2. He didn’t looked so interested. 3. He entered, puzzled but interested. 4. She had no photographs of herself taken since her marriage. 5. She stood where she was, frozen with terror. 6. He bowed low when presented to Dinny. 7. She took the wrapped parcel which he gave her. 8. He looked at her for a moment as though amazed at her friendless. 9. He spoke when spoke to, politely and without much relevance. 10. You could have passed my by unnoticed. 11. Puzzled by dim light, Sanders turned his attention to the inshore areas. 12. There was a stillness in the small intimate dining-room, broken only by the subdued ticking of a Dutch clock upon the wall.

8.2. Replace the attributive clauses by phrases with the Participle II.

Pattern: Allan who was greatly surprised answered, “That’s right”.

Greatly surprised, Allan answered, “That’s right”.

1. She who was astonished, stared at Peter, then looked the other way. 2. He looked back at the large car that was parked at the road side, already 10 years away. 3. One of their drivers who was brought by Gordini came over to me. 4. Arthur had brought two wildly excited friends who were called Tom and Nigger, for Barney and me. 5. One day she found, a letter which was slipped under the door. 6. John had enormous black eyes which were framed in velvety lashes and eyebrows. 7. Jane who was greatly surprised to see her son here looked up. 8. Eliza who was excited by his words moved along the street. 9. Why don’t we believe stories which are told by hunters or fishermen? 10. A tall, thin man with a sharp pointed face sat at the table that was laid for dinner. 11. She held the pencil that was choked with emotion.

8.3. Combine the two sentences into one using the Participle II as an attribute.

1. The small room was lit only by a dying fire. It looked terrifying. 2. They were in a narrow stone passage way. It was lit with flaming torches. 3. Jack entered the room. He was puzzled by interested. 4. Mrs Rymer gazed at the photograph. She was stupefied. 5. The came to the quiet little station. It was lit by a single bulb. 6. He strolled away from the hotel. He was stirred by the beauty of the twilight. 7. In the box there were some negatives. They were rolled up in a tight coil.

8.4. Paraphrase the following sentences using the Participle II as adverbial modifier.

1. She always became impatient when she was asked to define a word of whose difinition she was not sure. 2. Liza is always eager to help when she is asked to do any kind of work. 3. “ What?”, asked Nick as if he were puzzled with her idea. 4. The letter will arrive in time if it is sent today. 5. Though he was surprised, he didn’t say a word. 6. Rex assured her that the blind man was quite peaceful if he was left undisturbed.

8.5. Translate into English.
