Hard Disks

1. Hard disks consist of metallic rather than plastic platters. They are also tightly sealed to prevent any foreign matter from getting inside. Hard disks come in three forms: internal hard disk, hard-disk cartridge, and hard-disk pack.

2. An internal hard disk consists of one or more metallic platters sealed inside a container. The container includes the motor for rotating the disks. It also contains an access arm and read-write heads for writing data to and reading data from the disks. The operation is somewhat the same as for floppy-disk drives. That is, the disk drive has a seek operation and a search operation for reading and writing data in tracks and sectors.

3. From the outside of a microcomputer, an internal hard disk looks merely like part of a front panel on the system cabinet. Inside is a 5 ¼ -inch metallic platter with an access arm that moves back and forth. Drives with 3 ½-inch-diameter hard disks are also available. These provide faster access times because the access arm and read-write heads travel shorter distances across the diameter of the disk.

4. Internal hard disks have two advantages over floppy disks: capacity and speed. A hard disk can hold many times the information of a similar size floppy disk. One 120-megabyte internal hard disk, for instance, can hold more information than 150 3 ½ -inch double-sided, double-density floppy disks. Some external hard-disk drives for microcomputers (drives that are not built into the system cabinet) can store thousands of megabytes. Moreover, access is faster: A hard disk spins 10 times faster than a floppy disk.

VI. Прочтите 3-й абзац текста и ответьте на вопрос:

Why are drives with 3 ½-inch diameter hard discs are more effective?
