Английская улица не предназначена быть местом встреч, споров, свиданий или прогулок. Она не служит для того, чтобы
развлечься, побродить без цели, поглазеть по сторонам. Люди, которые собираются группами на тротуар мешая потоку пешеходов, привлекают внимание.
Англичанин молчаливо идет по своим делам, словно не замечая уличной толпы, не являясь ее частью. Никогда не увидишь, чтобы он обернулся, проводил кого-то взглядом. Отчасти потому, что это было бы недопустимым вторжением в чужую частную жизнь.
Считается, что улицы существуют не для человеческого общения, а для того чтобы без помех добраться из одного места в другое. Поэтому попытка вступить в разговор с незнакомым человеком на улице, на взгляд англичанина, столь же неуместна и даже антиобщественна, как попытка завязать флирт с водительницей соседней машины на перекрестке перед светофором.
Английская улица - это лишь русло, по которому протекает Жизнь, ибо англичанин живет дома, а не на людях. Причем даже на людях он умудряется охранять собственное одиночество и сохранять одиночество других.

(J) Some people, before starting on a sightseeing tour, try to read up about the places of interest they are going to visit. They say the more the tourist knows about the place of interest the more he (she) can see and the greater his (her) impressions are. What do you think about it?
The XXth century is the age of modern architecture and tall buildings. In some countries the heated discussion on the spread of tall structures in cities, especially in those having historical traditions, has blown up into a real war. Some think skyscrapers spoil the view of the old towns. "Glass boxes" are monotonous, they say. Some believe that, on the contrary, high structures built in old cities improve their skyline and add a certain modern touch to their old-fashioned looks. What do you think about all this?
The achievements of the ancient Greeks and Romans in building still underline the culture of construction of our contemporaries. Some believe, though, that modern architecture and the principles of town planning have little if anything to do with the ideas of the antique masters. What do you think about it? Can you support your point of view with facts and examples?
