The two main English-speaking countries are Great Britain and the USA. Great Britain is a small country (244.000 square km) situated on the British Isles. The official name of the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. (U.K. for short). The capital of the country is London (9 mln people). The population of G.B. is more than 60 mln. The greater part of the population lives in cities and towns. The most densely populated areas are England (Lowland) and the South of Wales and Scotland.

Great Britain consists of 4 main parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. London is the double capital: it is the capital of England and of Great Britain. London is one of the largest cities in the world (after Mexico City, Tokyo and New York). It is situated on both banks of the river Thames. The river Thames is not the longest river in Great Britain, but it is very deep and navigable all year round. So London is a great port. The longest river in Great Britain is the Severn. Other rivers are: the Trent, the Tweed, the Avon, the Clyde, etc. The highest mountain lies in Scotland — it is Ben Navis. The most wonderful lake is Windermere (in the Lake District).

Great Britain is washed by the North Sea in the East, by the Irish Sea in the West and by the Atlantic Ocean in the West-North. The English Channel separates Great Britain from the European continent. The warm current of the Gulf Stream, greatly affects the climate of the country, making it warm and mild. It often rains in all seasons of the year. The characteristic feature of the climate of Great Britain is fog (and even smog).

Great Britain is a constitutional monarchy. The power of a monarch is limited by the Parliament, which consists of two houses: The House of Lords and the House of Commons. The House of Lords is not elected. The House of Commons is elected every 4 years. The Prime Minister (the head of the Government and the head of the leading party) is the actual ruler of the country. There are some main political parties in Great Britain, but the two leading parties (Labour and Conservative) are always in struggle. The other parties are: the Liberal, the Communist and the Social Democratic.
