Rostov-on-Don is a young city. It was founded in December 1749. That year a customhouse was set at the Temernik river, and 12 years later a fortress was built to defend the town from enemies.
There were only 12 streets in Rostov of that time, and the population was about 2.000 people. People of all nations lived there, but Russians and Armenians dominated. Thanks to its advantageous geographical location, Rostov grew rapidly and turned into a large trading center, a big railway junction, a bus terminal and a port of 5 seas.
During the Great Patriotic War, Rostov-on-Don was twice occupied by fascists, but very soon it was restored by the citizens of our big country. At present, Rostov-on-Don is a large industrial city. Many branches are being developed here: agricultural machine-building industry, heavy industry, light industry, chemical industry and food industry. The main industrial enterprise in Rostov is Rostselmash. It produces harvesting combines. Lately Rostselmash has begun producing some consumer goods (washing machines, for example).
Our city is also a cultural center. There are 4 theatres here: the Gorky Drama Theatre, Musical Comedy Theatre, Theatre for Young Spectators and Puppet Show Theatre. It also has a Philharmonic Society, a conservatory, 20 cinemas, 7 museums, and 7 stadiums. There is also a circus.
Rostov State University is the center of science and education not only in the Rostov Region, but also in Southern Russia and the Northern Caucasus. Its 11 higher schools (including some institutes, academies and universities) train good specialists for all branches of our national economy.
Rostov-on-Don is a very green city with beautiful squares, parks, gardens, bridges, and historical monuments. It stretches for 4 km from the railway station to the Gorky Drama Theatre, the pride of Rostov.
