Методическая записка

Данные методические указания предназначены для студентов вечернего отделения естественных факультетов университета и состоят из 6 разделов; каждый раздел представляет серию упражнений, направленных на выработку и развитие навыков устной речи по таким темам, как "Биография", "Город", "Ростовский университет", "Великобритания", "Британский университет", " Специальность".

Все разделы имеют одинаковую структуру: тематический словарь, тексты для чтения, упражнения. Методические указания дают возможность студентам формировать и развивать навыки говорения (как в монологической, так я в диалогической форме) по темам, определенным программой и экзаменационными требованиями.

1. Biography

1.1 Read and memorize the following words and word combinations:

to be born - родиться

to come from - быть родом из, происходить

at the age of - в возрасте

to be married - быть женатым (замужем)

to be single - быть холостым

to leave (left, left) school - окончить школу

to graduate from - окончить высшее учебное

заведение

to enter the university - поступить в университет

to go in for - заниматься (чем-то)

to become a school teacher - стать школьным учителем

to be going to - собираться что-то сделать

to be fond of - увлекаться чем-то

a favorite subject - любимый предмет

to take a post graduate course - учиться в аспирантуре

1.3 Read the text and then answer the questions:

I am a first year student of Rostov State University. I am from Krasnodar. My family is not very large. We are five: my mother, my father, my grandfather, my grandmother and me. We live in a private house. Now I am going to tell you about each member of my family.

The head of our family is my grandfather. He is 65 and he is on pension. But he is the most active member of our family: he goes in for tennis, likes to go fishing and attend an English club. His favorite TV program is "What? Where? When?". I love him very much for his kindness.

My grandmother is a pensioner too, but she goes on working. (She is a nurse). She works at a military hospital. Her hobby is cooking.

Of special interest is my father, who is 40. His name is Boris. He is a clerk at a firm. He is a very busy man, but still he finds time for sport, theatre and cinema. He plays the guitar and often sings to it. He has got a lot of friends who come to see him on week-ends,

My mother is a charming middle aged woman and a keen housewife. She can do many things. She sews, knits, cooks. Besides she is fond of books and computers.

My name is Nick. I am 18. I am in the first year at the Biology Faculty of the evening department of Rostov State University. At the age of 7, I went to school. When I was in the fifth form (grade) I got interested in biology (especially in zoology). My dream was to become a teacher of zoology at school. I am a very busy man, because I have to combine work and studies. Four times a week I go to the university and have some lectures or laboratory work there. I work at a clinic. My work is interesting. My only hobby is collecting insects of all kinds.

B: That's right. She is very nice. I love her very much.

1. 7 Read the text and entitle it:

1. Charles Darwin was the greatest naturalist of all time and people. He was the first to present (представлять) the idea of evolution by natural selection. From his point of view, the struggle for life is the main cause (причина) of evolution. His famous book "Origin of the Species" caused a revolution in world biology.

2. Darwin was born in England, in the little town of Shrewsbury, to a family of a doctor. It was on the 12 of February, 1809.

3. In 1825, Charles Darwin was sent to Edinburgh to study medicine, but he disliked it and spent all his time watching the life of birds and animals. So he didn't become a medical man like his father. His father sent him to Cambridge to study theology, but he didn't become a clergyman either.

4. His participation in the expedition on the BEAGLE changed his life and his ideas of life. He returned back from the Galapagos Islands with a great collection of rare plants, insects, fish, minerals, shells and so on. He demonstrated all these at his numerous lectures which he delivered at schools, colleges and universities.

5. Oxford and Cambridge offered (предложили) him the honorary (почетную) degree of Doctor, but Darwin couldn't attend the ceremony -- he was too ill. He died in 1889 in Kent and was buried in Westminster Abbey. His followers were famous Russian scientists: Timiryazev, Mechnikov, Sechenov, Pavlov and many others.
