EDUCATION IN UKRAINE

Education is an important factor of society's development, its socio-economic, scientific, cultural and spiritual progress. Many people in Ukraine believe that a good education helps a person in society.

General secondary school is considered to be the most important element in the system of education as children spend 11 years at school. This is the time of intensive mental and physical development, during which man's character is formed. Secondary education includes general secondary schools, vocational secondary schools, specialized secondary schools.

Children start school at the age of 6 or 7. Four years are spent at primary school. By Ukrainian Law compulsory schooling is from age 6 or 7 to 17. Usually most of the children attend school till the age of 17 or 18 to receive secondary education. State secondary education is free of charge. 22000 general secondary schools operate in Ukraine. There is a wide network of gymnasia and lycees. Their number in Ukraine amounts to 250. Nearly 8 million children attend school. Classes range in size from 20 to 35 pupils (A.E-students). Boys and girls attend school together. A typical primary school day consists of 4 lessons (A.E.classes) and a secondary school day of 6 or 7 lessons. Each lesson is 45 minutes long. The school year starts on September 1 and finishes on May 18 for the youngest pupils and on May 25 for the rest of pupils. The school year is divided into four terms called quarters. Each quarter is followed by vacation.

During secondary school, children prepare for their future life. They study different subjects. Ukrainian and Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Handicrafts, Physical Education, Music, Art, a foreign language make up the National Curriculum. English is most commonly taught in Ukrainian schools as a foreign language. A wide choice of optional courses are offered to pupils. They can choose optional courses according to their likes and abilities.

There are also schools with an advanced theoretical or practical study of certain subjects. We have schools where greater attention is paid to a foreign language. These are schools with intensive learning of a foreign language. In this type of school a foreign language is taught from the first form (A.E. grade) on. The classes are held almost daily. For lessons the class is divided into 3 groups with 10-12 pupils in each group. In senior forms student are taught a course of Foreign literature and a course of Country Studies.

Certificate of Secondary Education assures the right to enter an institution of higher learning. Some 20% of all young people who finish secondary school go to universities or other institutions of higher learning. At the moment there are around 2 million students in higher education. There are 160 universities, academies, institutes in Ukraine.

The teaching and education procedure at secondary schools is provided by 500000 pedagogical specialists. 5000 Doctors of Sciences, nearly 40000 Candidates of Sciences teach (instruct) at higher educational institutions.

Some people consider that Ukraine has a smoothly running system of education, while others believe it needs radical changes as each new generation-must rise to a higher level of education and general culture, of professional qualification and civil activity. The present education system doesn't fully meet these requirements.

Some young people say in the year 2050 no one will attend school. Children will learn at home with a computer. The computer will be in the teacher’s house. Each computer will have a two-way television screen so students can see and" hear the teacher and the other students. The computers will also correct the homework for the students.
