Post-Text Exercises

Exercise 9.1 Read and Translate the Text into Ukrainian

Exercise 9.2 Read for Specific Information

Read and translate the statements. Correct the statements if they are wrong.

  1. Microprocessors are stable, cheap devices, which consume much energy and are used for measuring various fluid properties on-line.

  2. Numerous fluid properties can be measured with a silicon microsensor. The accuracy of measurement is not very high.

  3. The attention of scientists was mainly focused on calibrating and measuring the average properties of natural gases and fuel oils due to their extensive use in industry.

  4. Common leaks detectors are not very efficient. They lack accuracy while determining whether it is natural gas, propane or gasoline fumes.

  5. Pressure is not a risk factor in work of microsensors.

Exercise 9.3 Find Synonymous Vocabulary

Find words in the text that are close in meaning to the italicized words. Translate given sentences into Ukrainian.

  1. The scientists received the results that allowed to determine such parameters as temperature, pressure, viscosity and density.

  2. Silicon microprosensors are said to be reliable and durable devices used for measuring the velocity of a moving fluid..

  3. Sensors and advanced electronics technology are fast becoming a staple of modern consumer technology, enabling ease of use, more convenience, and higher levels of efficiency than ever before.

  4. The first “smart dishwasher”, introduced by Maytag in 1995, relies on a unique set of sensors, to constantly control the harsh environment inside a dishwasher and direct the dishwasher to save time, water and energy without compromising the quality of wash.

  5. The reliability of sensors has been evaluated at pressures from vacuum to the maximum pressures readily available in the laboratory.

  6. A Honeywell team concentrated on study of market strategy to manufacture low-cost, low-power, stable, efficient microsensors.

Exercise 9.4 Choose the Correct Definitions for Terms

Match each term with its definition. Translate these definitions into Ukrainian.

  1. Fugitive – having irregular projections and depressions, uneven in surface or contour, rough, wrinkled.

  2. Stable – an electronic circuit containing many interconnected amplifying devices and circuit elements formed on a single body or chip.

  3. Rugged – the internal friction of a fluid that makes it resist flowing past a solid surface or other layers of the fluid.

  4. Integrated circuit – not readily decomposing or changing from one state of matter to another, not undergoing spontaneous change.

  5. Conductivity – passing quickly away, fleeting.

  6. Viscosity – the property of transmitting heat, electricity, etc.

Exercise 9.5 Learn to Write a Summary

Give a short summary of the text.

Exercise 9.6 Controlled Practice

  1. Find sentences with modal verbs in the text. Translate these sentences into Ukrainian.

  2. Put the following sentences into Past and Future Indefinite

Tenses

  1. That device can function as a hot-film anemometer.

  2. The upstream film may be cooled by the air flow, but the downstream film must be heated by the air that has passed over the heated film in the middle.

  3. All three resistors in the Honeywell microsensor must be laminated inside two layers of silicon nitride.

Exercise 9.7 Focus on Translation

Translate the following sentences into English.

  1. Мікросенсор відповідає основним вимогам потенційного ринку, він використовується для оцінки основних характеристик природного газу.

  2. Детектор витоку газу не в змозі відрізнити природний газ від пропану, тому є необхідність створити мікро сенсори, які розрізняють властивості змішаних рідин і газів.

  3. Промислова апробація мікросенсорів рідин була завершена до травня минулого року.

Exercise 9.8 Discussion Point

Talk it over.

  1. What are the main characteristics of microsensors for fluid properties?

  2. What parameters may be measured by microsensors?
