Bibliography list (English Syntax)

  1. L.L. Iofik, l.P.Chakhoyan, a.G.Pospelova «Readings in the theory of English Grammar», Ленинград: Просвещение. – 1972, 224 c.

Chapters VI-VIII of this book are devoted to syntax, namely: word groups, the simple sentence (from the point of view of Classical Scientific, Structural and Transformational grammars) and composite sentence. The authors single out word-groups and word-collocations, and then classify adjunct-words and head-words as combinations of words to express thoughts, close and loose syntactic groups (close groups can be enumerated according to their leading number: verb, noun, adjective, adverb and preposition groups and loose syntactic groups include linked and unlinked). In the chapters devoted to sentences, different ways of combinability of the parts of the sentence are given; types of subject, object are also represented here as well as types of clauses.

  1. И.П.Иванова, в.В. Бурлакова, г.Г.Почепцов «Теоретическая грамматика современного английского языка». – м.: Высшая школа, 1981. – 285 с.

This book is written in Russian. In Part II «Словосочетание» the authors dwell upon the types of word-combinations and the criteria according to which all the word-groups fall into division (i.e., ядерные и безъядерные словосочетания). Part III consists of 3 chapters: «Признаки предложения (общая характеристика)», where the notion of the sentence and the classification of sentences is given, and other general notions as well, «Структура предложения» where types of analysis are described: constituent and constructive, «Семантика предложения» (aspects of syntactic semantics), «Прагматика предложения» (pragmatic types of sentences).

  1. М.Я. Блох «Теоретическая грамматика английского языка». – м.: Высшая школа, 1983. – с.383 с.

This book is also in Russian. Here M.Y. Blokh analyses the syntax of English grammar from chapters XX to XXI. As in the books listed above, the author begins the description with word-combinations and their combinability («Syntagmatic connections of words»). Then he gives general syntactic notions, first of all, the notion of the sentence. And then he tells us about the division of the sentences into simple (constituent and paradigmatic structure) and composite, which, in their turn, are divided into compound and complex. M. Y. Blokh also singles out semi-complex and semi-compound sentences. According to him, the semi-composite sentence «displays an intermediary syntactic character between the composite sentence and the simple sentence» [c. 340]. Moreover, the author gives the subject index with specifying major notions at the ends of the whole book.

  1. Б.С. Рогович, б.И. Роговская «Теоретическая грамматика английского языка». – м.: Высшая школа, 1967. – 298 с.

The second part of the book-syntax-begins with the description of the structure and the classification of the sentences. Then the authors speak about the simple sentences and parts of the sentence: primary (the subject and the predicate) and the secondary (complements). Then attributes, extensions, connectives, specifiers and parenthetical elements are described. After discussing the topic «Word-order» in simple sentences, B.S.Khaimovich and B.I.Rogovskaya presented the general division of the composite sentences into compound and complex ones. And the last chapter – the general overview of the direct and indirect speech.

  1. Н.А.Кобрина, е.А. Корнеева, м.И. Оссовская, к.А. Гузеева «Грамматика английского языка. Морфология. Синтаксис». – сПб.: Лениздат; Издательство «Союз», 2001. – 496 с.

This book is written in English. Beginning with the observing the structural classification of sentences and the simple sentence, the authors give information pertaining to the communicative types of sentences. Then we can see the chapter devoted to the non-sentence utterances and negation. After that the detailed classification of the parts of the sentence is given (the subject, the predicate, agreement of the predicate with the subject, the object, the attribute, the apposition, the adverbial modifier and the independent elements of the sentence: direct address and parenthesis). After speaking about the word-order and predicate complexes, N.A. Kobrina and co-authors give the information about composite sentences (common division into compound and complex). The last chapter «Indirect speech» differs from that from M.Y. Blokh’s book because here not general but more detailed information is given with regarding the concrete examples.
