Abbreviation rules

It is possible to use not only the common-used abbreviations in the text of the Master thesis, but also invented by the authors letter abbreviations standing for terms from the corresponding scientific fields. List of abbreviations should be placed before the list of references.

Formulas and symbol writing rules

Formulas are placed in individual lines in the middle of the sheet or inside the text lines. In the text it is recommended to place short, simple formulas, which don’t have individual meaning and should not be numbered. The most important formulas, as well as long formulas are placed on separate line. The formulas are typed with the help of MS Equation or Math Type.

Only the most important formulas which have further references in the text are worth numeration, which is done in the right part of the page in Arabic numerals in the round brackets.

Tables and figures formatting rules

Tables and figures have to be named and numerated (ex. Table 1, Figure 5). The numeration of the tables and figures should be based on end-to-end basis for the whole text. The tables’ numbers are given in the upper right corner over its name. Each table should contain the information on the measurement items and time periods. The figures’ names and numbers are placed under the drawing.

The list of references formatting rules

The list of references is placed at the end of the thesis. Both quotations and arbitrary interpretation of the principal ideas borrowed from the literature are included in the master thesis with reference to the resource. The presence of the multiple references outlines the honesty work of the author.

The list of references includes only the used resources (minimum one quotation from a resource). Literature resources should be placed in the alphabetic order of the authors.

The list of references example

Monograph / books

Castan, Edgar: Rechnungslegung der Unternehmung, 3. Aufl., München 1990.

Articles in collections

Giering, Klaus: Agenda 2000, in: W. Weidenfeld / W. Wessels (Hrsg.): Europa von A – Z, 8. Aufl., Bonn 2002, S. 53-57.

Periodical issues

Budäus, Dietrich: Operatives und strategisches Verwaltungscontrolling, in: Controlling, Heft 4/5-2002, S. 205-211.

Internet resources

Dörner, Dietrich: Die externe Qualitätskontrolle für Wirtschaftsprüfer und vereidigte Buchprüfer, in http://www.wpk.de/news-03-a-1999-03-01.html

Other resources

DaimlerChrysler: Geschäftsbericht 2001.

Word-for-word or gist coping without mentioning the source is considered to be plagiarism and leads to unsatisfactory assessment of the whole paper.

References for the used literature resources formatting rules

All the quotations are placed in quotation marks followed by the reference to the author’s name, year of publishing and the page number in brackets. Missed word in the quotation is marked with two dots, two and more missed words – by ellipsis. Own comments are placed in brackets at the end and are marked with the initials. One should avoid too long quotations, as well as indirect and secondary quotations.

If one gives a reference for the resource but the quotation is not delivered, it’s enough to place the name of the author and the year without the page numbers.

There is one more way of the references formatting when they are given as footnotes with mentioning the author’s name and the full book name and pages. The footnotes numeration can be both end-to-end or page-to-page.
