THE SIGHTSEEING OF LONDON

London is the capital of Great Britain. It is one of the biggest and most interesting cities in the world. About 8 million people live in London and its suburbs. London is a city of great contrasts. Its western part is the richest part of the city with its cozy mansions, beautiful avenues, shops, restaurants and hotels. The East end is the district inhabited by the workers and the poor. Quite an army of people lives from hand to mouth in its slums and miserable houses lining dreary narrow streets. Industry is chiefly found in that part of the city, gray with soot and smoke.

The heart of London is the City – its commercial and business center. London lies in the valley of the Thames. There are many historical places such as the Tower, the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, and Trafalgar Square, St. Paul's Cathedral), Buckingham Palace. London is famous for its museums and galleries. The Tower of London is an old castle on the bank of the Thames, formerly a fortress, a palace and a prison. There is a legend that the Tower of London will fail if it loses its ravens. Therefore the birds with clipped wings are carefully guarded. Now the Tower is a museum and houses the Crown jewels and other treasure.

The Palace of Westminster – the proper name for the Houses of Parliament – was the king's palace for five hundred years. Westminster Abbey is very old and beautiful; it is full of history. Nearly all the kings and queens of Britain were crowned and buried there.

Trafalgar Square was so named in memory of Lord Nelson's great naval victory in 1805, when he destroyed the French and Spanish fleets in the battle of Trafalgar. The statue of Nelson, Britain’s national hero, stands on the top of the one hundred and eighty-five feet high column with four great lions at its base. Now it is the traditional place for mass meeting and demonstrations of the English people.

Buckingham palace is the official London residence of the Queen. St. Paul's Cathedral was designed by Christopher Wren. The most notable feature of it is an enormous dome. It took Wren 35 years to build the cathedral.
