Unit 1

Read the text and do the exercises. Based on that discuss the topic:

English in our Life

Different nationalities have different languages. The total number of languages is more than 5000. The most wide-spread are English, Chinese, Spanish, French and others.

Nowadays English is the most important and wide - spread language in the world. It is the state language in five countries: Great Britain, Canada, the USA, Australia and New Zealand. It is now the dominant or official language in over sixty countries. Every well - educated person speaks English, because it is the language of international communication in many areas of life. English is the language of international air traffic control and emergency services. English is the chief language of international business and academic conferences, and the leading language of international tourism.

Most of the scientific, technological and academic information in the world is expressed in English, and over 80 per cent of all the information stored in electronic retrieval systems is in English. English is the main language of popular music, advertising, satellite broadcasting, home computers, and video games.

The present-day world status of English is the result of two factors: the expansion of British colonial power, which peaked towards the end of the 19-th century, and the emergence of the United States as the leading economic power of the 20-th century.

Our country needs good specialists in many spheres of national economy. Ukraine has relations with many countries. And if you want to improve your knowledge, to be more competent in your job, you should know English so as to read literature on your speciality.

New ideas in science, technology and medicine change so quickly that it is impossible to translate everything into different languages. So most things are published in English, and if you want to keep up with the latest ideas in any subject, you need English.

Of course, English is worth studying. There is a proverb "A new language - a new world". Our businessmen, tourists, experts often go abroad. Every visitor should be able to find his

own way about in an English - speaking community without interpreters.

Nowadays a lot of people study foreign languages in every possible way. Foreign language study groups are organized at industrial enterprises, at the offices of big firms, at educational establishments, at research institutes.

My English lessons were always interesting and instructive.
