Practice

I. Express your feelings on the following situations:

1. Your neighbour pokes his/her nose into your private life.

2. It's your day off and the weather is bad. It's pouring.

3. There are mice about the house.

4. You live on the 7th floor and returning home late at night you found there is no lift

service.

5. You have gone out and. remembered you've left at home the key from your car.

6. You are leaving for work. You see a spot on your blouse.

7. It has been a hot day and the milk has gone sour.

8. You sit up reading an interesting book. Suddenly the whole house is plunged in darkness.

9. A wife scolds her husband because he is clumsy at doing things about the house. 10. You are carrying shoppings when your bag gets torn.

II. Translate the following:

1. – Вы читали этот детектив?

– Да. Какое глупое содержание, не правда ли?

– Конечно. Халтура! Дальше идти некуда.

2. – Что за щенок! Все кругом оборвал. Что же будет дальше?

3. Три месяца как он уехал - и ни строчки! Хорошенькое дело!

4. – Помилуйте? За кого вы меня принимаете? Неужели вы думаете, что я мог

так поступить?

– От вас можно ожидать чего угодно. Вы - чудовище!

5. Все! Это последняя капля! К черту все! Еду отдыхать!

– Вы с ума сошли? Это же известный игрок! Он - хулиган!

III. Give examples from literary works or from cinema works of personages whom you may characterize as:

the wretch, the beggar, the stinker, the blackguard, the bully, the pot-boiler, the lazybones, the monster, the cokoo, the scoundrel, the swindler.

9. Persuade your partner to agree with your opinion that

– household pets are disgusting;

– advertising is great fun;

– machines should do routine jobs;

– traveling by air is very dangerous;

– English grammar is very difficult.

10. Your friend has agreed to spend the weekend with you.

11. Find out why your friend looks depressed.

12. Your neighbour keeps on parking his/her car in front of your windows.

13. Ask your friend to pay back the 10 pounds he or she owes you.

14. You feel fine today. Your friend doesn't seem so cheerful.
