6.9. Preparation between paint coats
There are two important factors to be considered before overcoating a previously applied paint film. First, it is important to ensure that there is no contamination such as dust, salt spray, oil and grease etc., on the surface to be painted. Dry dusting down with compressed air or brushes will generally be sufficient. In some cases the surface will have to be washed down with fresh water to remove dust and salt. The second important consideration is to ensure that the paint manufacturer’s recommended minimum and maximum overcoating intervals are followed carefully.
