The Last Inch After J. Aldridge

Ben was 43. He was an excellent pilot. Some years he spent in Egypt. He lived and worked there. But then he lost his job and had to film sharks in the Red Sea for Commercial Television Company. He was a good pilot, not an adventure to enjoy shark chasing with an undersea camera. But it was a lucky chance that he would do it. He was paid a thousand dollars for every five hundred feat of shark film. He couldn't choose.

He took films of Shark Bay in the perfect clear water of the Red Sea. It was always rilled with good-sized (huge) Red Sea sharks.

That time he took his son Davy with him. Davy was 10. He was rather pale, shy and serious for a North-American boy. Sometimes Ben showed the boy how to fly a plain, but the boy was airsick, and he hated the plain.

David was left on the coast (shore). Ben took his aqualung equipment and underwater cameras and jumped into water.

Deep in water Ben found sharks and began to film them (take film of them). The sharks didn't swim. They simply moved forward like gray rockets. He saw their jaws. He hated them and was afraid of them. At heart Ben wasn't sure that the sharks wouldn't dare to attack him. The film was almost finished. Ben was going to return. But suddenly he was attacked be the sharks.

When Davy saw his father on the coast something stuck in his throat. He couldn't say a word. He was more dead than alive, tears seized him. His heart sank. There were cuts and blood on father's legs and arms. His left arm was almost cut off.

David bandaged father's wound but the latter couldn't move. David brought the towel and laid it down near Ben. In spite of the terrible pain Ben did his best to get on the towel. David began to pull him to the plain. With David's help Ben could get into the plain, but he couldn't fly a plain. And David had no practice in it. He was only 10. But nobody could help them. Nobody knew about then. And in spite off all difficulties David could fly a plain and land it safely in the airport of Cairo.

Ben heard the silence. He opened his eyes and understood that he would live. He whispered: "Thank you, my boy. You are a brave pilot. You didn't lose heart and did your best. I am proud of you."
