The Open University was established in 1969 to enable people to study for a best degree at home. Now it is Britain’s largest teaching institution, with more than 1000000 men and women taking its various courses at any given time.

There are nearly 200 courses and in all of them (except for higher degrees) there is one principle: they are open to everybody. There are no formal entry examinations. You needn’t any certificate of education.

The O.U. operates by sending its educational materials to students in their own homes or places of work. It uses textbooks, video and audiocassettes and a variety of other equipment. Students of the O.U. receive their lessons and lectures in their homes by means of special TV and radio programs. They also work with their tutors all over the country.

Told by the Member of the Family After Leacock

Of all the different ideas about new holidays, I think that the best is “Mother’s Day”. I can easily understand that the eleventh is becoming such a popular date of America. And I am sure English people will soon celebrate the holiday too.

The day becomes especially important in a big family like ours. So we decided to have a big celebration on Mother’s Day. We thought of how much Mother had done for us, all these years, and decided to make it a great day, a holiday for the whole family, and do everything we could to make Mother happy, to let her enjoy herself. Father decided to make a holiday from the office, my sister Ann and I stayed at home from college and Marry and my brother stayed at home from High School.

It was our plan to make it day just like New Year’s, or any other big holiday. We wanted our house to look beautiful and asked Mother to buy flowers. The girls thought it would be nice to put best cloths, so they bought themselves new hats, and father bought new ties for himself and us. We were going to buy Mother a new hat too, but she said that she liked her old grey hat and girls said that it looked very nice on her.

Well, after breakfast we planned to take Mother to the country in a car. Mother is hardly able to go anywhere, because she is busy in the house almost all the time.

We wanted to enjoy the country air. But on the morning of the day, we changed the plan a little and decided to go fishing. So we asked mother to make sandwiches and eggs and coffee for all of us. We would want something to eat during the trip, though, of cause we knew that mother had prepared a big holiday dinner for us.

Well, when the car came to the door, and when we had pushed all the fishing things and the big bags full of food into it, we saw that we couldn’t all get in. Somebody would have to stay at home.

So in the end it was decided that Mother would stay at home and just have a lovely restful day round the house, and get the dinner ready.

It was quite dark when we got back, but Mother had guessed that we would be late, so she had made dinner later so as to have it just nicely ready and hot for us.

It was quite late when it was over, and we all kissed Mother before going to bed, and she said, that it had been the most wonderful day in her life.
