Blending natural fibres with synthetics in new ways to produce “techno-naturals” is aimed at adding to the aesthetic and performance advantages of textiles.
Textile Research & Development (R&D) has advanced in diverse directions, including combinations of electrical devices and clothing.
Electronic devices are being woven into clothing to provide continuous heart-rate monitoring.
Using silver nanoparticles, the researchers added “bumps” to common fibres and achieved a lotus-like repellent effect.
A colour-changing textile is an electrochromic textile that changes colour under electronic textile.
The conductive yarns, principally metal-coated nylons and conductive fabrics form part of the overall system for carrying the signal.
It ranges from putting in an existing consumer device to heating, to trying to cool clothing, to trying to get simple forms of information into clothing.
Exercise 3. Write the summary of the text. Text b. Innovative Textiles
The popularity of cold weather adventure sports has increased the demand for fabrics and technologies that provide warmth, comfort and ease of movement with less bulk. There are many insulating fabric materials which are used in the manufacture of apparel and accessories.
Two such materials are the newer “intelligent” insulator, Comfortemp® and the original “warmth without bulk” material, ThinsulateTM. Both were ground-breaking technologies when they were introduced.
An intelligent nonwoven textile material, Comfortemp® is made from high quality fibres integrating special materials that can change their physical state due to external forces such as body heat or outdoor temperature. This Phase Change Material (or PCM) technology is considered as one of the most important developments in the field of temperature control fabrics. The introduction of micro-encapsulated PCMs (mPCM) allows the manufacturer to regulate the amount of PCMs in a textile, thus regulating its insulation qualities. Comfortemp absorbs the excess heat when it gets hot, then releases it when it gets cold. PCM are substances that can change their physical state. The best known PCM is water.
ThinsulateTM is a synthetic thermal insulation made of microfibres that are about 10 times smaller than the fibres of most other synthetic insulation. It is lightweight durable, moisture-resistant and breathable. With less weight and bulk it offers high insulation properties. It is quick drying and maintains its warmth even while damp.
As an insulator for cold weather sleeping bags, jackets, parkas and ski boots, Thinsulate is a proven leader. When selecting apparel for mountain climbing or a cross-country skiing adventure, Comfortemp is the better choice for clothing layers.
The latest innovation of the apparel and textile industries is moisture observant fabric capable of moisture management. This fabric is very much in demand by the manufacturers because it absorbs all the moisture and sweat and moves it away. This fabric works much better than cotton because it keeps skin very dry. The higher rate of absorbency results in higher comfort level. The fabric has proved its usefulness in sportswear and working gears.
Modal® is called the new “wonder” fabric. It is a bio-based textile made from cellulose of beech trees. This fabric combines the benefits of natural fibre and the fantastically soft feel of modern microforms. Having hydroscopy higher than cotton, and the luster of silk, Modal® remains soft and lustrous after several washes.
