Developing a global brand

Companies spend a lot of money on developing their brand and designing their logo. Market research shows that more and more people are paying attention to the brand of the things they buy. Why? Because global brands like Pepsi have ideas and values connected with them.

Some people are very loyal to one brand because of the ideas and values associated with quality or reliability.

Other people are buying an image of themselves- the brand you see says what kind of person you are. Drinking Pepsi Max means you want to get the most from life – you want freedom and adventure, and therefore you are an exciting person. Wearing Nike trainers or sports clothes is all about individual achievements; you can do anything you want – just do it.

Tasks and exercises:

    1. Answer the questions:

Why do people buy a particular brand?

Are brands important to you?

What brands do you buy?

What values do you associate with them?

What image do you want other people to have of you?

Are there any brands you would not buy?

    1. Match the words and phrases:

1. Logo

2. Values

3. Loyal

4. Image

5. Individual achievements

6. Brand-conscious

b. something you do successfully, on your own

    1. Design your own brand. Think of a product you like. What ideas and values do you want to be associated with it? Give it a name and design a logo.

    2. Hold brainstorming meeting about this situations:

Behind its main building, your company owns a piece of unoccupied land. The company is doing well and its Chief Executive wants to spend money on facilities for staff. Brainstorm the different ideas for facilities that could later be put to employees in a vote. These ideas have already been suggested:

• ornamental garden • go-kart track • gym

It's your company's 50th anniversary. You and your colleagues have been asked to brainstorm suitable ways of marking and celebrating this important event.

You work in the R&D department of a chemical company. You have developed an invisible, odourless glue that can be applied to paper, textiles, plastics and even metal. The glue is sticky enough to hold something in place, but it comes unstuck if someone pulls on one of the things that it is being used to hold together. Brainstorm the possible applications for this glue.

You work for a European airline. There is now a delay of 30 mins or more in the departure of 45 per cent of the flights, and there have been instances of air rage in the departure lounges, with angry passengers abusing staff. Brainstorm all the ideas you can think of for keeping passengers calm while they are in the departure lounges.

Your city owns a huge disused power station on a prestigious riverside site. The building is an impressive listed monument from the 1930s, and it cannot be demolished. You and your fellow city councillors brainstorm the different uses to which it could be put.
