BELARUSIAN CHAMPIONS OF SPORT

Today Belarus is among the leading nations in the development of sport and physical recreation. Here are some of the best Belarusian athletes :

Alexander Madved was one of the greatest world’s freestyle wrestlers. In 1963 he was awarded the title of Merited Master of Sport and in 1969 he became the Honoured Sports Activist of Belarus. In 1991 he was elected the first Belarusian NOC President. Alexander won gold medals at three successive Olympiads in 1964, 1968,1972. A three-time European (1966,1968,1972) and seven-time World Champion (1962-1963, 1966-1967, 1969-1971) he lost the World title only once in 1965. He fought competitors more than 60 kg heavier than himself. At present Professor A.Medved. the author of 45 research papers and two books, heads the Inter-institutional Department of Physical Development at the University of Informatics and Radio-electronics and is the Vice-President of Belarusian NOC..

Elena Belova was the greatest performer in the history of Belarusian fencing. She achieved her sports glory by winning at the 1968, 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games, World and European Championships. Ph.D in pedagogics she is the Professor of the Department of pedagogics and psychology at the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture. She was a member of the NOC Executive Committee and represented the European Female Organization “Woman and Sport” in Belarus.

All the greatest Belarusian speed skating victories in the sports arenas all over the world are connected with the name of Igor Zhelezovsky. Our famous athlete was crowned World Champion six times. No other skater since has managed to repeat this result. At present he is a successful businessman devoting a lot of time and effort to the development of Paralympic sports in Belarus.

A really fantastic was the performance of Olga Korbut at the XX Olympic Games in Munich. Her elements on the beam and uneven bars have become specific terms bearing her name – “Korbut somersault”, “Korbut back flip”, etc. In Montreal she won a gold medal in women’s team competitions and silver medal at asymmetric bars.

Vitaly Shcherbo was one of the most successful Belarusian gymnasts. From 1990 to 1996 he really dominated in gymnastics and won 13 World and 10 European golds. Merited Master of Sport, the 1990 Good Will Games winner 1 he was awarded the Jessie Owens Prize as the Best Athlete of 1992. It happened after his triumphant performance at the

1992 Olympic Games where he won six gold medals.
