А. Велика Хартія Вольностей – це грамота, підписана в 1215 англійським королем Іоанном І. Вона складена латиною і складається із 63 статей. Цей документ був підписаний в результаті невдоволення баронів посиленням королівської влади, податковим ярмом та невдалою зовнішньою політикою короля. Більшість статей відбиває та захищає інтереси аристократії. Однак інші класи також отримали значні права. Велика Хартія Вольностей гарантувала дотримування королем певних зобов’язань по відношенні до баронів. Хартія започаткувала свободу особистості. Жодна людина не могла бути заарештована, заточена до в’язниці, позбавлена (deprive of) власності чи заступництва закону, вигнана (exile) чи піддана будь-якому іншому покаранню інакше, ніж за рішенням суду та згідно законів країни. Це був перший в історії Англії документ, який обмежував владу монархії і проголошував права та свободи громадян. Велика Хартія Вольностей стала наріжним каменем англійських свобод. Багато з її статей були розвинуті у акті Хабеус Корпус та Біллі про права. Велика Хартія відіграла найважливішу роль в англійській історії. Вона й зараз є одним із чинних актів конституції Великобританії.
Б. За актом Хабеус Корпус будь-яка особа, заарештована за скоєння якогось кримінального злочину, мала право звернутися сама або через свого представника до монарха з клопотанням про видачу наказу «Хабеус Корпус». Отримавши цей наказ, начальник в’язниці (warden) був зобов’язаний представити заарештованого перед суддею, який перевіряв підстави для його заточення під варту. Хабеус Корпус Акт – найважливіша гарантія громадянських свобод в Англії. Згідно з ним жодна вільна людина не могла бути заарештована без достатніх підстав.
В. Конституційна конфронтація в 15 столітті призвела до появи документу, відомого як Петиція про Права. Король Карл І, потребуючи гроші, намагався отримати ці гроші від своїх підданих без згоди парламенту. В 1628 році парламент примусив короля прийняти Петицію про Права, яка дозволяла королю збирати податки лише за згодою парламенту. Цей документ гарантував англійським підданим інші права.
Г. Боротьба монарха та парламенту призвела до революції під назвою «Славна революція» 1688 року. Король Яків ІІ був повалений (overthrow), і йому довелося залишити країну. Його підозрювали (suspect of) у бажанні зробити католицьку релігію офіційною релігію в Англії. Англійський Біль про Права обмежував владу монарха, наділяючи (vest with) парламент вирішальною владою, і забезпечував захист англіканської церкви від будь-яких спроб релігійної контр-реформи Якова ІІ чи його спадкоємців. Англійський Біль про Права передбачав багато ідей, що стосувалися держави та права, які згодом були відображені в американській Декларації про незалежність, Конституції та Білі про Права. Крім обмеження влади монарха, документ декларував такі традиційні права англійців, як право на суд присяжний, заборону жорстоких покарань, право звертатися з клопотаннями до уряду та право носити зброю, яке давалося лише протестантам.
