14. Decide whether the following statements are true (t) or false (f), if the sentence is false, correct it. While answering use the following phrases:

a. it is a layer of dividing cells found in the stems of plants. It forms the specialized xylem and phloem cells and causes the stem to increase in thickness.

2.stem

b. it is the main root of some plants; it extends straight down under the plant with very little side branches.

3.tap root

c. it is the axis of a plant; it may be above or below the ground.

4. root hairs

d. it is a modified root that stores nutrients. Potatoes are the examples of these roots.

5. cambium

e. it is a plant structure that obtains food and water from the soil, stores energy, and provides support for the plant. Most of these grow underground.

6.transpiration

f. these are very thin, hair-like roots that are extensions of the root’s epidermis. They have a large surface area and absorb water and minerals for the plant.

7.tubers

g. it is a cap-shaped structure at the ends (tips) of the roots. It covers and protects the apical meristem (меристема) (the actively growing region) of the root.

8.root cap

h. this is the process in which plants lose water through pores in their leaves (these openings are called stomata). As water is lost from the plant, the plant takes up more water (and minerals) through its roots. The rate of this varies as the conditions of the plant change and is controlled by the opening and closing the stomata.
