The British Museum has become the principal museum in the United Kingdom, with a rich collection of archaeological and ethnographical material from all over the world, and a wide variety of art treasures. It is also the national library for books and periodicals. The British Museum originated in 1755 in the government’s purchase and amalgamation of three collections: the antiquities and natural history specimens assembled by the physician Sir Hans Sloane, the Cottonian library and antiquities accumulated over 50 years by the Cotton family of Westminster, and the Harleian Collection of Manuscripts built up by the 1st and 2nd earls of Oxford.

Paul's Cathedral.
On June 21,1675 was laid the first stone of the New St. Paul's, which
was not finished for thirty-five years. The cathedral is Sir
Christopher Wren's masterpiece. It stands at the top Ludgate Hill on
a site where a Christian church has stood since the 7th
century. The magnificent classical structure is crowned by the dome.
Inside the dome are scenes from the life of St.Paul. Here too is the
famous Whispering Gallery, where visitors are requested to sit down
upon a matted seat, that they may be shown how a low whisper uttered
against the wall can be distinctly heard at the other side of the
dome. There are many memorials in the Cathedral including those to
heroes such as Wellington and Nelson.
The
Tower of London
was first built in 1078 by William the Conqueror, for the purpose of
protecting and controlling the city. The present buildings are partly
of the Norman period, but architecture of almost all the styles which
have flourshed in E
ngland
may be found within the walls. The Tower has in the past been
a
fortress, a palace and a prison, and has housed the Royal
Mint, the Public Records and (for a short time) the Royal
Observatory. It was for centures the arsenal for small arms and is
still garrisoned. For six hundred years, from the thirteenth century
to the nineteenth, it also housed the Royal Menagerie, the
predecessor of the London Zoo. The Tower is famous for its
illustrious prisoners, such as More and Guy Fawks. Many notable
people lost their heads on the executioner’s block. The Tower is
guarded by the Yeomen Warders popularly known as “Beefeters”.
W
estminster
is the political centre of London, was until the 11th century a
sacred place. King Edward the Confessor decided to build a great
abbey church here. It was consecrated in 1065, but a week later the
king died and was buried in the abbey. His tomb became a popular
place of pilgrimage. It still can be found at the
heart of the
present Westminster Abbey. William the Conqueror was
crowned in
the Abbey and since then all Coronations are held here. The Abbey
contains many royal tombs, memorials to eminent men and women.
But the most popular ones are those to writers, actors and musicians
in Poet’s Corner. Along side the Abbey Edward the Confessor had a
palace built. The Palace of Westminster was the royal residence and
also the country’s main court of law. Parliament has met here the
16th century until the 19th century.

present Houses of Parliament
were built after the old palace was burnt down in 1834. The building
comprises the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the
two chambers where parliamentary business is debated. On the corner
next to Westminster Bridge stands St.Stephen’s Tower, which chimes
the hours.

well as historical and includes both the famous and the infamous.
Many of the original models made by Marie Tussaud of her great

and cultural heritage. The interior has been faithfully maintained
for posterity exactly as described in the published stories. The
famous study overlooking Baker Street is located on the 1st floor
Visitors can sit in Mr Holmes's arm-chair by the fireside to pose for
