Food

Some people say that traditional English food is boring, tasteless. It is chips with everything and totally overcooked vegetables. So it is difficult to find a good English restaurant with a reasonable price.

In most cities in Britain you’ll find Indian, Chinese, French and Italian restaurants. They say that this is because English have no “cuisine” themselves, but this is not quite true.

A typically English dish is “Fish and chips”. A traditional English breakfast is a very big meal – sausages, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms. Nowadays many people just have cereals with milk and sugar, or toast with marmalade, jam or honey. The traditional breakfast drink is tea, which people have with cold milk.

For many people lunch is a quick meal. The evening meal, which traditional English family calls tea, is the main meal of the day. They usually have it between 6.00 and 8.00 and often the whole family eats together.

Americans eat a lot. They have three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Most Americans don’t eat at home but prefer to go to restaurants. Americans drink a lot of juices and soda, eat a lot of meat, fruits and vegetables, not much bread. In the morning Americans have cereals or scrambled eggs, milk or orange juice. Chicken or fish, fried potatoes, vegetable salads, and desert; this is the most common menu for lunch. Dinner is probably the most important meal of the day and they usually have dinner when all members of the family are at home. For dinner Americans usually have meat, fried or baked potatoes with ketchup or sour cream, corn, peas, sometimes pasta and cheese or spaghetti; ice-cream, fruit or cake may be for dessert. Turkey, ham and apple pie are traditional for Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners.

The most popular and well-known Ukrainian dish is surely borshch, an aromatic and appetizing red-beet soup. Varenyky are also traditional in Ukrainian manu, these are a type of boiled dumplings with various fillings (cherries, strawberries, fried mushrooms, potatoes etc) and holubtsy - cabbage rolls stuffed with minced meat and rice.

If you have an occasion to be at the Ukrainian home, you will be charmed by the sincere warmth of hosts and home-made food.
