Reading Exercises:
Exercise 1. Read and memorize using a dictionary:
remote controls, appliances, jumbo, incandescent bulbs, filament, impurities, doping, junction, depletion zone, insulating state. |
Exercise 2. Answer the questions:
1) What are light emitting diodes?
2) What kinds of devices do LEDs form?
3) How do LEDs work?
4) What is the conductor material of LEDs?
5) What is the depletion zone?
Exercise 3. Match the left part with the right:
1) The process of adding impurities is |
a) a pure conductor that has had impurities added to it. |
2) Either of these additions make |
b) the simplest sort of semiconductor device. |
3) LEDs are just |
c) the material more conductive. |
4) A diode is |
d) called doping. |
5) Most semiconductors are make of |
e) tiny light bulbs that fit easily into an electrical circuit. |
Exercise 4. Open brackets choosing the right words:
In a (exhausted / depletion) (area / zone), the semiconductor material is (come back / returned) to its (genuine / original) insulating state – all of the holes are filled, so there are no (spare / free) electrons or (hollow / imply) spaces for electrons, and charge can’t flow.
II. Speaking Exercises:
Exercise 1. Describe diode; appliances; jumbo; incandescent bulb; semiconductor material; impurity; dope; holes; electrode; exposure using the suggested words and expressions as in example:
diode a semiconductor; that; consists of, a p-n junction; a thermionic tube; having; two electrodes; used; as a rectifier. example: A semiconductor that consists of a p-n junction. A thermionic tube having two electrodes, used as a rectifier. |
appliances durable goods; for; home; or; office; use; a device; that; is; very useful; for; particular job. |
jumbo of; great; mass. huge; and; bulky. |
incandescent bulb emitting; light; as; a result; of; being heated. |
semiconductor material a substance; as; germanium; or; silicon; whose; electrical; conductivity; is; intermediate; between; that of; a metal; and; an insulator. |
impurity the condition; of; being impure. |
dope add; impurities; to; a semiconductor; in order to; produce; or; modify; its; properties. |
hole an unoccupied space. |
electrode a conductor; used; to make; electrical contact; with; some part; of; a circuit. |
exposure the act; of; subjecting; someone; to; an; influencing experience. |
Exercise 2. Ask questions to the given answers:
1) Question: ______________________________________________ ?
Answer: A semiconductor is a material with a varying ability to conduct electrical current.
2) Question: ______________________________________________ ?
Answer: In the case of LEDs, the conductor material is typically aluminium-gallium-arsenide (AlGaAs).
3) Question: ______________________________________________ ?
Answer: A diode comprises a section of N-type material bonded to a section of P-type material, with electrodes on each end.
