159 Indirect speech: statements peg 120, 287, 307-14

  1. The policeman said that there had been an accident and the road was blocked and it wouldn't be clear for some time. Than he advised us to go round the other way.

  2. Children suggested lighting a fire andcooking their sausages.

  3. Paul said that he was thinking of going by bus but his aunt advised him not to go by bus as it was a bad service ther.

  4. He warned us to take sleeping bags as we might have to sleep out.

  5. Peter said that he had left some books on my table. He thought I'd find them useful and said I could keep them as long as I needed them but that he'd like them back when I had finished with them. I thanked him and said I'd take to take of them.

  6. The Japanese professor said that if the children could learn a complicated language like Japanese by the time they were five and added that they should be able to learn the language of music and at the moment he was teaching a class of forty three-years-olds tp play the violin.

  7. Tom said that the puppy could sleep on their bed but she said she'd rather he slept in a basket because that puppy would soon be a very big dog and there wouldn't be room for all three of them.

  8. Ann said that she'd try by herself first and if she found that she couldn't manage she'd ask Tom to help her.

  9. Mary suggested camping by the stream because if they went on, it might be dark before they found another good place.

  10. The students wished they'd brought their guitars so then they could have offered to play in the restaurant and perhaps they would have been given a free meal.

  11. Jones said that he'd booked a double room on the first floor. The receptionist said she was afraid that they hadn't got his letter and all rooms had been taken but they could give him two single rooms on the third floor. Jones said that wouldn't do him at all.

  12. The farmer said that he'd had gypsies on his land and they'd given nobody any trouble but now the Council had asked him to tell them to move on. He didn't see why they should be asked to move and was writing to his MP about it.

  13. Mr. Jones grumbled that the letter was full of mistakes. The typist admitted that she had done it in rather a hurry and said she supposed she'd better type it again.

  14. The receptionist said that if they'd like to go on any of those tours the hotel would arrange it. The American couple said they'd like to go on them all.

  15. The policeman said they'd try to find my passport but it would be very difficult because a lot of suspicious characters slept on the beach in summer and any one of them might have robbed me.

  16. Ann suggested going the races and said they might make their fortunes. She'd been given a very good tip for the 2.30. He said he had had “good tips” from her before and they had been disastrous.

  17. Mr. Jones said that he didn't know why she wasted so much time polishing the car and Mrs. Jones replied that all the neighbors were polished so she didn't want their Mini to look like a poor relation. If he were any good he'd help her instead of standing there criticizing.

  18. Peter apologized for not having a tie on. He said he didn't know it was going to be a formal party.

  19. Paul said that he would have enjoyed the journey more if the man next to him hadn't snored all the time.

  20. I said I was thinking of going alone and the old man advised me to take someone with me. It was safer as one could keep watching while the other slept.

  21. Paul says that the plans have been changed and he wants us to meet him at Victoria tonight.

  22. Tom said that if he wanted a hot bath he had to put ten pence in the meter and even then it wasn't hot enough. I said that was ridiculous and that it was high time he left that place.

  23. My nephew said that he knew the umbrella belonged to me but he thought it would be all right if he borrowed it because I wasn't going out the following day and he was.

  24. Tom suggested putting my tape-recorder under the table and making a recording of their conversation. It would be very useful to know what they were planning. I said that my recorder made a distinct hum and they'd be sure to hear it and look under the table and then they'd find the recorder and ask all sorts of embarrasing questions.

  25. The girl said that whenever her father was unhappy he would go out and buy something, usually something large and useless so their rooms were full of things they couldn't use. Tom said that he was sorry for her father; he must have been a very unhappy man.

  26. He said I could leave my motorcycle in his garage if I liked and that he would keep an eye on it while I was away.

  27. He told Ann that if she wanted a job she should read advertisements and write letters and ring people up because it was no use sitting at home, expecting employers to form a queue outside her door.

  28. He said it used to be a lovely quiet street but that now it was impossible. When summer came I'd have to keep the windows shut all the time because of the noise.

  29. Peter said I must leave a note for my mother otherwise she'd be terribly worried when I wasn't in at my usual time.

  30. Mary said that a letter marked “Urgent” had just arrived for Albert and he was on holiday. She wondered if she should ring him up and tell him about it or wait till he came back.
