158 Indirect speech: statements peg 307-8, 313-14

  1. He said that he was going out but he'd be in by nine.

  2. She said that she was working in a restaurant and didn't much care for it.

  3. Peter said that he couldn't live on his basic salary and he'd have to offer to do overtime.

  4. Mary said her young brother wanted to be a tax inspector and she couldn't think why because none of her family had ever been a tax inspector.

  5. They said they were waiting for the school bus and it was late again.

  6. He said he had made a terrible mistake. I said he was always making terrible mistakes and should be used to it by now.

  7. He said that they made £450 a week and sent most of it to home to their wives.

  8. He said it was lonely being away from their families but they earned three times much in that factory as they would in their own country.

  9. He said that they had been there for two and half years and were going to stay another six months.

  10. He said that he'd got a job on oil-rig. I said that would be very hard work but he replied he knew it would be hard but he didn't mind hard work and it would be a good experience.

  11. He said that the ice would soon be hard enough to skate on and she said she would look for her skates when she got home.

  12. She said she was living with her parents at the moment but she hoped to have a flat of her own soon.

  13. She said she was leaving the following day by the 4.30 from Victoria and we said we'd come and see her off.

  14. He said he'd just bought a car but it wasn't insured yet so he couldn't take me for a drive.

  15. She said she would like to speak to Susan but she was bathing the babies and they would drown if she left them alone in the bath while she went to the phone.

  16. Ann says that she is coming up to London next week. She hopes we will meet her for lunch one day.

  17. She said that nothing ever happened in the village and it was like a dead village because young people had drifted away to the towns.

  18. He said that he had missed his train and he'd be late for work and his boss would be furious.

  19. They said they would wait for me if I was late.

  20. I said that they were supposed to be landing at London airport but if the fog got any thicker the plane might be diverted.

  21. She said that if I lent her the chainsaw she'd bring it back in two days’ time.

  22. He grumbled he hated getting up on dark mornings and his wife agreed it was horrible but said the mornings would be lighter soon and then it wouldn't be quite so bad.

  23. She said that the sales were starting the following day and as soon as they finished work the whole typing pool was going to make a dash for the shops. I said that I hoped they would all get what they wanted.

  24. He said he wished he had something to eat and his sister said he had only just had lunch and she didn't know how he could be hungry so soon.

  25. My aunt said that if I was short of money she could lend me £50 and I could take my time about paying it back.

  26. He said he usually took his dog out for a walk when he came home from work.

  27. I said I had a message for her brother. Ann said that he wasn't at home and he had left two days before.

  28. I said I had bought the bag in Milan and Peter said I shouldn't have bought that color because it didn't go with my coat.

  29. She said she must hurry as her father was always furious if any of them were late for meals.

  30. The bus conductor said that if I wanted to smoke I would have to go upstairs.

  31. Charles said he was building himself a house and he wouldn't show it to me just yet but when the roof was on I could come and see it.

  32. Peter said that the lake would probably freeze that night; it was much colder than the previous night. Mary said she would go out and look early in the morning and if it was frozen she would make some boles in the ice so that ducks could feed.

  33. The official said that even if the strikers went back the following day it would be some time before things returned to normal.

  34. Mrs. Jones said that someone was trying to murder her. She kept getting threatening letters.

  35. She said she was taking her children to the zoo the following day.

  36. Ann said that all she could hear was a high-pitched buzz so she wondered if it was some sort of signal.
