Introduction

Speech etiquette is a part of the genetic makeup, it is a nearly immutable characteristic of our native pattern of speech. Unfortunately, uninformed speakers will often find themselves in awkward language situations, giving off undesirable first impressions, without ever knowing or thinking they are rude at all because they do not realize the implications that their own language etiquette may have in another language. Fortunately, native speakers are often quick to recognize a foreigner and will likely grant the trespass of certain linguistic boundaries without repercussion in most cases.

So, speech etiquette is important, firstly, not to be incomprehensible and not to find one in an unpleasant situation. Secondly, knowing and using speech etiquette creates an impression of an intelligent, highly educated, polite person. Thirdly, every act of communication aims to get some information or to arrange meetings, bargains, so speech etiquette ensures successfulness and effectiveness of communication acts.

Thus, the object of the paper is cell phone communication, and the subject of the paper – peculiarities of the usage of SEF in oral and written communication on the сell phone.

Etiquette is ‘norms, manners, and ceremonies established by conventions as acceptable or required in social relations, in a profession, or in official life’. Manner of speech, style and choice of language means cannot be separated not only from general speech behaviour but from speech behaviour in communication on cell phone too. Continual development and improvement of technologies give an impetus for new types of speech etiquette arising. Such new types are cell phone speech etiquette and texting etiquette.

So, the aim of this research is to study, analyse, and define etiquette in the communication context, and to investigate profoundly the usage of such speech etiquette subtypes as cell phone speech etiquette and texting etiquette.

From the aim of the study we have formulated the tasks of the study:

    • to analyse the literature concerning the problem of speech etiquette and its subtypes;

    • to manifest the types and functions of etiquette and speech etiquette particularly;

    • to survey such notions as cell phone speech etiquette and texting etiquette;

    • to study how speech etiquette is applied in the cell phone communication;

    • to examine different points of view on the problem of SMS language effect on students literacy;

    • to generalize the typical rules of speech etiquette concerning its usage on the cell phone.

In course of this work we used such methods of investigation as:

  • analysis of the literature;

  • synthesis of received information;

  • generalization of ideas;

  • systematization.

The first chapter of our work deals with the historical dynamics of etiquette, its types. It reveals the notion of SE, its structure, and factors determining the choice of SEF with the account of social and individual peculiarities.

In the second chapter we investigate the application of SE on the cell phone in oral and written form (texting) and the effect of texting on the language.
