IV. Read the text given below and list physical and psychological benefits of going to a gym.

After Princess Diana died in 1997, the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, called her ‘the people’s princess’. This was not only because she was very popular, but also because she did many things that ordinary-people did. One of these things was to regularly visit her local gym.

Over the past twenty years, going to a .gym has become an important part of many people’s lives. The fitness business is booming! But for many people, fitness is not the main reason for going to a gym. They go because they are unhappy with if their appearance. They want to change the way they look by losing weight and making their muscles firmer. Even the beautiful Diana was not satisfied with her body!

There are gym-goers, however, who exercise to improve their fitness. It makes them feel good. They have discovered that walking miles on a treadmill, or using a rowing machine, has many physical benefits. They have more energy, their health is improved and they feel less stressed. Studies have shown that regular exercise also has many psychological benefits. It improves confidence and self-esteem. People also report that when they are fitter, they can think better.

Sandy, a 27-year-old graphic designer, goes to a gym at least three times a week. “Sometimes I think I’m mad. I’m already very busy. Why am I adding one more activity to my schedule? But I do feel great afterwards. And I love being able to run for the bus in the morning without feeling I’m about to take my last breath!”

V. After paying large amounts of money to join a gym, many people don’t go regularly. Others eventually stop going altogether. What pieces of advice would you give to such people?

VI. Compare your pieces of advice with motivation tips given below.

  1. Choose a gym close to where you work or live. If you have to travel far, it’s harder to go.

  2. Set yourself goals, but make sure they are realistic.

  3. Go with a friend. If you arrange to meet someone, you are more likely to go.

  4. Go to the gym at the same times each week. If exercise is part of your weekly schedule, you are more likely to do it.

  5. Many people stop exercising because they hurt themselves. Ask your instructor for advice on how to avoid injury.

  6. Every now and then you will decide to miss a gym session. Do not feel guilty! If you feel guilty, you may also feel that you’ve failed. People who think they have failed are less likely to go back.
