Student Dasha Klimova

Hello! My name’s Dasha Klimova. I’m eighteen. I’m from Donetsk.

I finished school last year but I couldn’t enter the university because my external tests scores were lower than the university required. This year I passed independent tests with good results and was enrolled. Each academic year consists of two parts called semesters or terms. At the end of each semester we have tests and examinations in four or five subjects.

I take a course in Applied Mathematics. I’m going to be a programmer. It’s very difficult to be a student at the Faculty of Mathematics and IT. Just look at the subjects we study: Calculus, Algebra and Geometry, Computer Architecture, Fundamentals of Programming, Software Engineering, Programming Languages, Discrete Maths. Thank God, I live at home with my parents and don’t have to think of daily chores. I only tidy up my room once a week. My homework takes most of my time and Calculus – half of it. I hate Calculus! I’m not going to do research in pure mathematics. Why are we given so much Calculus?

After my fourth year I’ll get my Bachelor’s degree if I manage to pass my Calculus of course.

Student Nastya Savchuk

I’m Nastya Savchuk. I’m nineteen. I’m from Novosyolovka, a village in Donetsk region. I study at Donetsk National University. I’m in my third year. I take a course in pure mathematics at the Faculty of Mathematics and IT. I like my course, but the first year was very difficult. I faced the biggest challenge of my studies, Calculus. I couldn’t pass my exam in Calculus at a first go and felt so frustrated that I was about to quit university, but my parents, teachers and friends encouraged me to continue my studies. So I pulled myself together, met the challenge, and now I’m a third-year student. After my fourth year I’m going to teach mathematics at my own school in Novosyolovka.

I live in a hall of residence and now I love it. There are so many friends. If you have problems with your homework, there is always someone who can help you. But it took some time to get used to living here: at first I couldn’t fall asleep because of the noise. Now I don’t pay attention to it.
