Situation 1. Study the following definitions and tell about places where Ukrainian people can do shopping.

Department stores – is a large shop which sells many different kinds of goods.

A chain store – is one of a series of stores owned by one company and selling the same merchandise.

Supermarket – is a large self-service store selling foods and household goods.

Chemists – is a shop where medical drugs are dispensed and sold and in which toiletries and other medical goods can be purchased.

Boutique – is a small shop selling fashionable clothes, shoes, or jewellery.

Semi-annual sales – is a sole occurring every half year.

Half-price sales – is selling for half the normal price.

Clearance-sales – is a sale of goods at reduced prices

Hypermarket – is a very large self-service store

Situation 2. The sentences given below describe different types of shopping places. Put them in the necessary columns to describe different place for hopping. Mind that some sentences may refer to more than one type of shop.

1) This sort of shops is a vast building, many storeys high.

2) At the exit there is a cash desk where you pay for all your goods.

3) Lager towns now usually have a special area for pedestrians only, with shops grouped together, sometimes enclosed in a large building.

4) There you can buy everything you want, from a box of matches to a suite of furniture.

5) Today it has a number of stalls, mostly selling cheap or second-hand goods, but also flowers, fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as meat and fish.

6) All the household and food shopping can be done there.

7) They offer more elaborate facilities for the customer’s convenience and comfort than other shops: restaurants and public toilets, public telephones and hairdressing, credit accounts and a number of comfortable fitting rooms, theatrical agencies and travel agencies, delivery and after-sales service.

8) The stall-holders often come to town from the country to sell their goods, or travel round regularly from to town.

9) Most of these shops are very modern and are equipped with speedy lifts and escalators, and have well-planned lighting, ventilation and heating.

10) The stalls usually start selling early, and may finish by mid-afternoon.

11) These shops operate on a self-service system: you go in, pick up a basket and walk around choosing what you want.

Situation 3. Imagine you are looking for the following things. Ask what store you would go to.

b) Now read and translate the dialogues given below and act them out:

1)

- Вибачте, вчора я купив пуловер у Вашому магазині і хотів би його поміняти.

- Чи можу я подивитись на Ваш чек, сер? Що Вас не влаштовує у Вашій покупці?

- Боюсь, я купив пуловер більшого розміру, ніж мені потрібний.

- Зрозуміло. Ви праві. Зараз я Вам запропоную інший пуловер.

2)

- Чи можу я Вам чимось допомогти, мадам?

- Декілька днів тому я купила чайник у Вашому відділі. Але мені не сподобався його колір, тому я хотіла б його повернути і отримати гроші за нього

- Вибачте, я можу подивитись на чек покупки?

- Ой, мені здається, я десь його загубила.

- Нажаль, я не зможу допомогти Вам. Ви маєте зберігати чек протягом декілька тижнів, якщо Ви плануєте повертати або обмінювати Вашу покупку.

3)

- Вибачте, Ви мені не вірно дали здачу. Ви маєте додати мені ще 15 гривень.

- Вибачте, я зараз перевірю. Так, Ви праві. Ось Ваші гроші. Вибачте, сер, за мою помилку.

Situation 5. Read the dialogues with their translations. Cover the left or the right sides. Act out them using your memory.

Dialogue 1 Jack: What are you doing? Mary: Making a shopping list for today. Jack: Do we need so many things? Mary: We haven’t got much tea or coffee left, and we have run out of sugar and jam. So I must go to the grocer’s. Jack: What about vegetables? Mary: I’ll ask George to go to the greengrocer’s after school. We haven’t got many tomatoes. But we still have a lot of potatoes. And I must go to the butcher’s. We haven’t got any meat at all.

It’s made of silk. Karen: Hm, it looks nice, but I’d like to have something warm for the winter. Saleswoman: Maybe you would like a heavy wool scarf. How about this one? Karen: I think that’s what I want. How much is it? Saleswoman: It’s …. seventy-five dollars plus tax. Karen: It’s a little expensive. Do you think it’s possible to get a discount? Saleswoman: Hm, since you like it so much, how about a 10 percent discount. That’s the best I can offer. Karen: That’s good. Could you wrap it up for me? Saleswoman: Sure. Is there anything else I can get for you? Karen: No, that should be it. Thank you.
