Proper names

As it can be seen with the naked eye, the poem is namely soaked with different proper names which can be divided into three groups.

1) Names of buildings

St. Aidan's (Church) in Harehills, Leeds, West Yorkshire is a Church of England parish church built in 1894.

(The church is dedicated to Aidan of Lindisfarne, a Christian missionary credited with restoring Christianity to Northumbria).

St. George's (Church) may refer to various churches dedicated to Saint George(a Roman soldier and a priest in the Guard of Diocletian, who is venerated as a Christian martyr).

We may assume that it is St George's church based in the of Leeds, West Yorkshire that is meant.

St. Mary's (Church) as well may refer to different churches situated in England. John Betjeman presumably mean the one in Swillington, West Yorkshire.

2) Personal names

There is no particular information on the two people mentioned in the poem – Auntie Maud and Mr. Grogley. We may only assume that while Auntie Maud may be a fictional person serving as a metaphor for a pious woman, Mr. Grogley might be a person who really existed.

3) Miscellaneous

The (old) Great Western Railway was a British railway company that linked London with the south-west and west of England and most of Wales.
