1. The word “shaft” refers to a vertical shaft. In some countries it refers to entrances and openings into a mine which are not vertical. A road way driven from the surface to a shallow seam, or from one seam to another, and having a low gradient compared with an inclined shaft in a metal mine, is usually referred to as a drift.
2. Shafts are necessary in mining enterprises where the mineral to be won is at some distance below the surface of the earth. Through them men and minerals are wound in cages or skips to the surface, and materials taken underground. They house water pipes, power supply, pipes and cables, etc. Shafts are also the medium through which the ventilating current enters and leaves the mine.
3. The correct siting of the shafts in relation to the area to be developed is highly important, as upon this factor might depend the future success or failure of a mine.
4. Mistakes in siting are usually associated with unforeseen underground conditions. Therefore a comprehensive investigation and study of the configuration of the underlying seam by prospecting and boring is essential for the detailed planning of the mining developments. The position of the shafts is dependent upon both underground and surface factors.
