Moscow State Technical University
MSTU is one of the oldest and biggest polytechnical educational institutions in our country. It was established as early as 1830 and since then has gained a high reputation both in our country and abroad.
Having developed on the basis of a former Trade School and passed through a number of reorganizations. MSTU has become an advanced institution it task is to train highly qualified engineers for all fields of national economy and industry. Its pedagogical and scientific progress is closely associated with the names of many Russian eminent scholars, originators of new trends, founders of world-known scientific schools, such as Zhukovsky, Gavrilenko, Lebedev, Tupolev, Shukhov, Korolev, etc.
The university has always been a center of national engineering developments and has become an innovator in higher engineering education.
In 1868 Moscow Higher Technical School, as it was then called, was running only two courses - Mechanical Technology and Chemical Technology with the students body of about 300.
In 1930 it has been further developed on the basis of its oldest course - Mechanical Technology. In the same year it was named after N.E.Bauman, a Russian revolutionary.
Several years ago MHTS was reorganized into University. As a result of its reorganization the structure of MSTU has been changed. During its long history it advanced educational institution that has always met the demands of modern science and engineering. At present the University has 13 faculties, the number of students totaling up to 18000. These faculties are:
Materials and technology
Robotics and complex automation
Special machinery
Radio electronics and laser technology
Power engineering
Informatics and control systems
Fundamental sciences
Engineering business and management
And there are some faculties of the University located at the industrial enterprises in Moscow and Moscow Region:
Aero-space
Rocket and space engineering
Mechanical optics
Instrument engineering
Radio engineering
The training course involves advanced teaching methods in fundamentals, general engineering subjects and professional skills. Humanities are also included into curriculum. A number of research institutes and laboratories equipped with up-to-date facilities have been set up for the purpose. There students can develop their creative abilities.
The course of study lasts 5 years and 9 months. The first- and second-year students study general engineering subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, descriptive geometry, strength of materials, theoretical mechanics, elements of machines, drawing etc. During the last years the students study a number of specialized subjects. At the end of each semester students take a few tests and 3 or 4 exams. The final year is devoted to a diploma project.
Many students are engaged in research. A lot of students are members of the Students Research Society.
Informatics and control systems faculty
In 1929 there appeared a new department in the MHTS - the Instrument Building Faculty. It was one of the largest faculties of the MHTS. The Faculty was headed by professor Drozdov who was its first Dean. Professors Drozdov, Dobrogursky, and others did much for the development of the Faculty.
After the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 the Faculty began developing rapidly and the students body increased greatly. In 1987 the Instrument Building Faculty was divided into two separate faculties: the Informatics and Control Systems Faculty and the Radioelectronics and Laser Engineering Faculty.
The Informatics and Control Systems Faculty has 10 departments. They are:
Automatic Information and Control Systems;
Orientation, Stabilisation and Navigation Devices and Systems;
Information Systems and communications;
Designing and production of electronic - computing and telecommunication systems;
Automated Systems of Information Processing;
Computer Systems and Networks;
Software and Information Technology;
Information Security.
Information Science and Computer Technology;
Information Protection.
The departments are headed by prominent scholars.
At present the Faculty has more than two thousand students. The training course at the Faculty lasts five years and nine months. It includes lectures, seminars, practical training in well-equipped laboratories and workshops and practical sessions at various plants and research institutes. The third- and fourth-year students study such specialized subjects as fundamentals of electronics and pulse techniques, theory of automatic regulation and control, fundamentals of computing technique, information theory, applied theory of gyroscopes, theory of technical cybernetics and others. The final year is devoted to a diploma project
Many students of the Faculty are members of Students Research Society. The graduates of the) Informatics and Control Systems Faculty are known as highly qualified specialists.
