Exercise 1. Read the following sentences. Point out the Objective Participial Construction, the Subjective Participial Construction and the Nominative Absolute Participial Construction. Translate the sentences into Russian.

1. The two men were heard arguing. 2. My work having been finished, I left the office. 3. She felt the temperature dropping. 4. The children were seen playing in the garden. 5. The expansion of trade resulted in the improvement in the foreign trade figures, with export growing by 12 per cent. 19. The bus drivers being on strike, many people had to get to work using other means of transportation. 20. We didn't know when to go shopping, each shop opening at a different time. 21. The nurse left me waiting in the reception room. 22. It being a wet night, the cafe was fairly full.

Exercise 4. Read the following story and point out predicative constructions with Participle I. Put questions to these sentences. Retell the story to your group-mates.

Sitting at the bar with his friends Mr. Smith, a great hunter, was telling one of his usual stories. "That winter it was terribly cold," He said. I, absolutely worn out, was returning to my camp in the forest. Being terribly cold and hungry I could think of nothing else but a hot meal by the fire. It was getting dark and suddenly I heard somebody following me and turning back I saw a pack of wolves running up to me. I made a rush to a tree standing near by, and did my best to climb it. Having tried it several times I succeeded at last. But looking down I saw a wolf trying to catch hold of my feet. Having pulled up my knees I fell that I was sale for a moment. But I was too weak to hang in that position for a long time. And under the tree there were 20 fierce wolves with their heads up, looking at me with their mouths watering, waiting for a hot meal too." Saying I his Mr. Smith couldn't help drinking another glass of wine. "What happened next?" asked one of the listeners. "Er ... well I felt down," answered Mr. Smith lost in thought. "And what?" cried all the listeners in one voice. "Can't you guess?" replied the gentleman taking another drink. "The wolves ate me, of course."

Exercise 5. Translate the following sentences using the Objective Participial Construction, the Subjective Participial Construction or the Nomina! Absolute Participial Construction.

1. Так как лекция была очень интересной, все слушали ее с большим интересом. 2. Мы пошли пешком, а Мэри взяла такси. 3. Я слышал, как они говорили по-французски. 4. Я не починил вчера часы, так как мастерские были закрыты. 5. Когда работа заканчивается, я всегда чувствую себя усталым. 6. Ему надо сфотографироваться на следующей неделе. 7. Она услышала, как произнесли ее имя, и обернулась. 8. Эта повесть очень интересная, причем написал ее не писатель, а врач. 9. Они видели, что кто-то сидит на скамейке. 10.
