Daily Programme Household Chores
This dialogue is a conversation between two girl-friends, Mary and Alice. They like to jog together in the morning. Now they are running along the street. So the conversation begins.
- Mary, you look a bit tired.
- I’ve been preparing for my English lesson almost the whole night through. I had to make a report on Charles Dickens's biography.
-
Oh, you're always having so much homework. And for you it's simply inconceivable not to prepare. What's the matter with you today?
-
I have been preparing it perfectly. Why not, if it is not difficult to me, besides I always have enough time for entertaining. For example, my friends and I are going to the pictures tonight.
-
Oh, how happy you are! As for me, I have to go to the laboratory after classes today to have some practice in pronunciation. But luckily for me I have no homework to prepare for tomorrow.
-
Then you have an opportunity to go somewhere when you are free from your studies.
-
I'd love to. But I'll have to help Mum to do some work about the house. There's a lot of linen to be washed and ironed. Besides, two weeks have passed since I promised to bake a cake. So I'll do all these things this afternoon.
-
And in our family the dirty linen is put in a linen basket and sent to the laundry. So, my housework usually includes washing up, watering the flowers and doing my room on Saturday.
-
At the weekend we never do any work about the house. We like to go to a theatre or to a dance.
-
Aren't there evenings in your family when you gather together round the dinner table?
-
Yes, sometimes we have supper with all the members of the family present. We discuss the latest news and the most important events of the day. My brother and I tell our parents about our progress at the University.
-
And in our family there's almost a tradition to watch television in the evening. Our tastes differ but most of all we prefer watching adventurous or feature films and also sport competitions.
-
And what time is it, Mary?
-
It's already half past seven.
-
It's just the time for us to return. Oh, I'm dreaming about a cold shower and then I'll eat my favourite cornflakes with milk and strawberry.
-
A cold shower. . . A good idea! But one must have strong will to do that. As for me, I prefer a warm bath.
-
Oh, you simply don't know how great it is to rub yourself with the towel and to feel fresh. And then I usually brush my teeth and wash my face.
-
Oh! We must hurry up because before going to the University I have to do my hair perfectly in order to impress my friends at the pictures tonight.
-
And won't you have time for it in the afternoon?
-
No, after classes I usually go to the reading-room to prepare my homework there.
-
Oh, you're constantly studying! Well, have fun in the evening.
-
You too. See you tomorrow.
-
Goodbye.
