Text Three

The nights are drawing in.

I’m looking forward to sitting by a nice fire.

The leaves on the oak trees turned yellow.

You are not going bald, are you!

Mrs. Smith: Quite chilly, isn’t it, Mrs, Jones?

Mrs. Jones: Yes, summer’s over. The nights are drawing in.

Mrs. Smith: I prefer autumn anyway. It gets so hot in summer I can’t sleep.

Mrs. Jones: You’re right. I’m looking forward to sitting by a nice fire again.

Mrs. Smith: We’re getting old, I suppose. The seasons flash past so quickly.

Mrs. Jones: The leaves on the oak trees have turned yellow already. Beautiful!

Mrs. Smith: My hair’s going grey. No one says that’s beautiful.

Mrs. Jones: The trees will soon be bare. You’re not going bald, are you, Mrs. Smith!

Drill 1

Drill 3

  4. We’ll do the job in three days. It’ll take us three days to do the job.

  5. She cooked the meal in half an hour. It took her half an hour to cook the meal.

  6. You can fly to Spain in an hour and a half. It takes you an hour and a half to fly to Spain.

  7. He’ll finish his studies in three years. It’ll take him three years to finish his studies.

  8. They walked to the station in a few minutes. It took them a few minutes to walk to the station.

Drill 4

Drill 5

1 Does she like tea or coffee? She prefers tea to coffee.

3 Do you like swimming or sunbathing? I prefer swimming to sunbathing.

4 Does he like cooking himself or eating in restaurants? He prefers cooking himself to eating in restaurants.

5 Do they drink beer or wine? They prefer beer to wine.

6 Does he normally walk or take buses? They prefer walking to taking buses.

7 Do they eat onions or garlic? They prefer onions to garlic.

8 Do they wear yellow or red shirts? They prefer yellow to red shirts.

Exercise 1

It was raining when I woke up last Saturday. It always rains when I am not working. We had planed to go to the seaside, but in the end we decided to go to the theatre instead. We missed the bus, and arrived late. We had arranged to meet Joe outside the theatre and he had been waiting for twenty minutes when we got there. The play had already start when we went in. It’s Monday again today, and I am working as usual. I have been sitting here in the office for the last two hours, but I have not done much work yet - I feel (am feeling) too fed up to work. I have already had my holiday this year. I went to Scotland in July and, of course, it rained (was raining) every day. Tomorrow I am going to book (I’ll book) a holiday for next April in Spain.

Exercise 2
