Exercise 1

1 When I was a little boy I used to smoke cigarettes occasionally.

2 I stopped smoking completely, however, before I reached the age of 10.

3 We used to live by the sea in those days and my brothers and I often used to walk along.

4 My big brother used to steal the cigarettes from my father’s pocket while he was sleeping.

5 At that time my father used to smoke more than forty cigarettes a day and he never used to notice when Jack took a few from one of his pockets.

6 One day my father saw us while we were smoking on the beach, but to our surprise he only smiled and said nothing.

7 After that we used too buy cigarettes from time to time and, although our smoking was no longer a secret, we still used to go to our favourite spot to smoke them.

8 A few months later, however, we lost interest and I have never smoked since then.

Exercise 2

1. I used to be a keen footballer when I was at school. I used to play for a local boys’ team and every Saturday afternoon I would get on my bicycle and (I would) ride off to the park, where there used to be several small football pitches in those days. Sometimes we would win and sometimes we would lose, but we would always enjoy ourselves immensely. After the game I would usually chat with the others for an hour or so. Then I would hurry home for tea. My mother and I used to live in the little house next to school. She would always prepared a bath for me, and we would have tea together immediately afterwards.
