A FAMILY

When two persons are married, the man is called the husband; the woman becomes his wife. When a child is born in the family, the father and mother of the child are called parents. A family generally consists of a father, a mother and children - sons and daughters or both. The first born child is the eldest, the last born- the youngest. Two children that are born together are called twins.

The father and mother of the husband become the father-in- law ( in law - by marriage), and mother-in-law of the wife. The husband is the son-in-law; the wife - the daugther-in-law; they have brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

The other members of the family are the relatives or relations:uncles, aunts, cousins, etc.

The brothers and sisters of any of the parents become the uncles and aunts of the children. The children of two married brothers or sisters are cousins to each other.

In case of a second marriage, we speak of a stepfather or a stepmother, stepson, stepdaughter, etc.

About My Family

My family is not very big, just a typical family: Dad, Mom, me, my brother and sister and our cat. My Mummy is forty- one, she is a teacher of Spanish at the University. She is a born teacher. She has teaching abilities. My Dad is forty-two, he is a professional painter, he works for a design company. My parents both like their work very much.

My elder sister Natasha is nineteen, she goes to the University, she wants to be a teacher of history. She is fond of reading books on history and fiction.

My younger brother Igor is only six years old, he goes to the kindergarten. He is very funny, I like to spend my free time teaching him something. Igor likes to play with our cat.

My grandparents are retired. They like gardening. They spend a lot of their time in the garden. They grow vegetables and fruits. We enjoy having fresh vegetables and green on our dinner table.

I love my family very much. We always help each other. Everyone in my family is my best friend.

TARAS PETRENKO’S FAMILY

Taras Petrenko is eighteen years old. He lives in Lviv in one of the residential areas. He lives with his family. His family consists of 5 members. Taras’s parents have two more kids besides him. He has got an elder sister Ira and a younger brother Roman. His brother is a schoolboy. He is thirteen. Taras’s sister is two years him senior. So Ira is twenty already. She is an accountant by profession. Ira is married. Her husband is a journalist. They are four in the family. She has two children - a son and a daughter. They are twins. They are lovely little kids. They are three years old.

Taras’s parents are not old. Father is fourty-four and mother is four years him younger. His father is an engineer in computers and his mother is a teacher of English. They like their work very much.

Taras has grandparents. They are already pensioners, but they are still full of life and energy. They do not live with them. They live in the country.

Taras has got many relatives both on his mother’s and father’s side. His uncles and aunts on his mother’s side live in Odessa. They are married and have children. Taras’s cousins are school-children. They often come to visit their relatives in Lviv. His relatives on his father’s side live in Sambir. Taras likes to visit them. They all are a friendly family.
