1. При наличии двух сомнительных форм, та после, которой стоит дополнение с предлогом by, обычно причастие в роли определения

• The student asked by the teacher answered well.

2. Если в предложении есть явное сказуемое, то сомнительная форма является причастием в роли определения к тому существительному, после которого оно стоит.

• The article translated last week was difficult.

• A scale attached to this prism indicates the number of degrees.

3. Если после сомнительной формы стоит прямое (беспредложное дополнение), то это – сказуемое.
