Foreword

The abstract is dedicated to the 15-th anniversary of creation of the Commonwealth of Independent States and presents statistical materials characterizing socio-economic situation in the Commonwealth countries for 1991-2005. It includes information on population, employment, gross domestic product and other macroeconomic indicators, prices, production of basic industrial and agricultural output, consumer market, consumption of main foodstuffs, money income and expenditure of population, social sphere, external trade, international comparisons.

The source of the information contained in the abstract are official data of the CIS national statistical services.

Brief methodological explanatory notes are given for some statistical indicators.

Aggregated and other derived indicators are calculated, as a rule, on the basis of common methodology approved by the Council of the Heads of Statistical Services of the States-Participants of the Commonwealth. Recalculations of a number of сost indicators were done with the usage of average official exchange rates published by the CIS national banks of the Commonwealth countries.

The abstract is published in Russian and English.

Уважаемые читатели!

Предлагаемый Вашему вниманию статистический сборник посвящен пятнадцатилетию образования Содружества Независимых Государств.

В нем дана развернутая объективная характеристика произошедших за этот период изменений в жизни государств-участников Содружества. На основе материалов официальной статистики показан их путь от глубокого экономического кризиса начала 90-х годов до преодоления его с выходом на состояние, когда половина государств добилась превышения уровня развития дореформенного 1991 года, а остальные находятся на пути к этому.

Систематизированная в сборнике обширная информация позволяет проследить динамику наиболее важных показателей экономики стран, выявить изменения структурного характера, проанализировать процессы, связанные с производственной, инвестиционной, транспортной, торговой, финансовой деятельностью. Большое внимание уделено характеристике внешней торговли государств-участников СНГ, особенно взаимной торговли в рамках Содружества. Несомненный интерес представляют данные социальной статистики, в частности, об основных демографических характеристиках, занятости населения, его уровне жизни, образовании, здравоохранении.

Важно, что приведенные статистические сведения всех государств Содружества базируются на общей статистической методологии и поэтому сопоставимы по каждому показателю между собой, что позволило странам обмениваться статистической информацией и проводить сравнительный анализ происходящих в них процессов, способствуя принятию решений по повышению эффективности взаимодействия. Это, кстати, также один из результатов совместной работы наших государств за прошедший период.

Данные сборника сопоставимы и в международном плане, поскольку статистика стран Содружества в результате реформирования перешла на принятые в мире статистические стандарты. Это позволило привести в сборнике международные сравнения по отдельным показателям.

Международная сопоставимость и одновременный перевод русского текста сборника на английский язык позволяют ознакомить с жизнью государств-участников Содружества за прошедшие 15 лет широкий круг читателей многих стран мира.

Надеюсь, что сборник будет полезен всем, кто интересуется жизнью Содружества.

Dear readers,

The statistical abstract that is offered for your attention is dedicated to the fifteenth anniversary of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

It provides objective panorama of the changes occurred in the life of the countries-participants of the Commonwealth for this period. On the basis of official statistics materials shown is their way from deep economic crisis at the beginning of the nineties to its overcoming and reaching the state, when half of the countries managed to exceed the level of development of pre-reform 1991 year and the rest of the countries are on the way to it.

The broad information systematized in the abstract makes it possible to observe the dynamics of the most important economic indicators of the countries, to reveal the structural changes, to analyze the processes connected with the production, investment, transport, trade, financial activities. Great attention is paid to the characteristics of external trade of the countries-participants of the CIS, especially mutual trade in the framework of the Commonwealth. Of great interest are the data on social statistics, in particular, on main demographic characteristics, employment of population, its living standards, education, health care.

It is important that statistical data of all the countries of the Commonwealth presented in the abstract are based on the common statistical methodology and that is why they are comparable between each other for each of the indicator, which enables the countries to exchange statistical information and make comparative analysis of processes taking place in them, thus helping to take decisions on increasing efficiency of interaction. In fact, this is also one of the results of the joint work of our states for the past period.

The data of the abstract are internationally comparable as far as statistics of the Commonwealth in the result of reforming have made the transition to the statistical standards being practiced in the world. This made it possible to give international comparisons in the abstract by selected indicators.

International comparability of the data and the translation of the Russian text of the abstract into English makes it possible to familiarize a wide range of readers of many countries of the world with the life of the states-participants of the Commonwealth for the past 15 years.

I hope that the abstract will be useful for those who are interested in the life of the Commonwealth.
