Домашні тварини живуть з людиною, яка їх утримує, надаючи їм житло і їжу. Домашні тварини приносять людині користь, або як джерело матеріальних благ і послуг, або як друзі, що скрашують його дозвілля. Домашні тварини можуть міститися в спеціальних приміщеннях (скотний двір, стайня, собача будка), але можуть жити і безпосередньо в будинку людини. З тих тварин, які живуть в будинку, одних містять в клітинах, акваріумах, тераріумах і інших "будиночках", а іншим (наприклад, кішкам, собакам, кроликам і навіть мавпам) дозволяють вільно переміщатися по приміщенню.
Кожна людина має свої власні переваги відносно тварин. Одні люблять собак, інші їх не люблять, а більше шанують кішок. Багато хто однаково відноситься і до тих, і до інших, та до того ж і інших тварин любить не менше.
