Chairperson: Hello, there. What do you study? Student: Development Economics.
Chairperson: Oh, yes. And how long have you been studying? Student: One year. It’s a postgraduate diploma.
Chairperson: What would you like to be? Have you decided yet? Student: Yes. I’d like to be a United Nations Project Adviser.
Chairperson: Oh, would you? That sounds interesting. Tell me though why have you chosen this faculty?
Student: It’s got a good reputation in the field of Economics. Chairperson: Where do you come from?
Student: Brazil.
Chairperson: Oh, that’s a country I’ve always wanted to go to. And what do you do in your free time?
Student: I go to the cinema a lot.
Chairperson: Ah, yes. You’re Mr. Pinto, aren’t you? I’ve got your name on my list here.

Interviewer: What are the typical working hours in your country?
Jessica: The official hours are 8 to 5 or 9 to 6. But people always work longer than this.
Interviewer: What do people wear for work? Jessica: Casual but smart.
Interviewer: How long do people have for meal breaks? Jessica: One hour.
113
Interviewer: Do people ever work late? Jessica: Yes, very often.
Interviewer: How many days vacation do people get a year? Jessica: 30 days.
Interviewer: When do people retire?
Jessica: After 60 for women and 65 for men or after 30-35 years of work. Interviewer: When do people get paid?
Jessica: Depends on the company. Some companies pay twice a month and others once.
Interviewer: Do people get any bonuses or perks?
Jessica: Yes, depending on the company and the status of the worker they receive a car, house, school for the children, lunch vouchers, transport passes, house ensurance.
Interviewer: Do people stay with the same company all their lives?
Jessica: No, this has changed a lot in Canada. In the past the good worker was one who stayed 20 or 30 years with the company. Now a good worker changes job every two or three years.
Interviewer: Do people ever use personal connections to get a suitable job for them or a member of their family?
Jessica: Yes, this is very common and the best way to get a good job.

1)It’s quite cheap to live here although in certain parts of town the accommodation is really very expensive. Everyday things in the shop are very cheap compared with England, although clothes can cost a lot.
2)Oh, it’s incredible. I mean, there are so many cars and lorries. You see, the railways system is not very extensive so everything has to go by road. But at rush hours at the centre of town it’s so busy.
114
3)It’s a very interesting place to visit, although I wouldn’t call the buildings beautiful. But the palace is quite fascinating and well worth spending a day on. And then there are some wonderful churches and mosques.
4)It rains all the time, it’s quite famous for that. Even in the middle of summer you are never certain that the sun will shine all day, so it’s difficult to make plans for any outdoor activities.

Interviewer: Let’s talk a little a bit about leisure activities. (1) What would you say is the most popular leisure activity in your country?
Jessica: Hockey.
115
Interviewer: (2) What is the next most popular? Jessica: Socket, then swimming, then maybe basketball.
Interviewer: (3) What do people do in summer and winter evenings? Jessica: We watch TV all together, and in the summer we go out. Interviewer: Would you go out every summer evening?
Jessica: Yes.
Interviewer: (4) What do people do on Friday or at the weekend?
Jessica: Parents go to a movie or eat a pizza. On Sunday nights my friends and I go out to the city or a main square and meet up. There are lots of bars to have a drink and chat. Later you might go clubbing or to a private party. Afterwards we might go for a pizza or have breakfast.
Interviewer: (5) How do you like to relax personally?
Jessica: Personally I like to do a lot of things. I used to play for the volleyball team for my town but then I quit. I used to play tennis and basketball and I quit. Then I did theatre for a long time. I like performing.
Interviewer: (6) Is there any particular custom of going for a walk to a special place in the evening?
Jessica: The city centre.
Interviewer: How long do they spend in the city centre? Jessica: Hours, walking around and talking to people.

Interviewer: Is this your first time being in a space documentary? Scientist: No, I sort of come whenever NASA calls. When someone wants to talk to a NASA scientist I usually show up. I've done a lot of television before. Interviewer: You talk about the immense size of the universe. So how big is it? Scientist: That's actually quite a matter of debate right now. ... In one sense it's very easy, there's the visible universe. The universe began about 13 billion years
116
ago and the visible universe is basically anywhere that light has had a chance to travel to us from that time.
We actually don't think that's the whole extent of the universe; that's just the amount we can see. The universe if probably much bigger than that, it may be infinite it may be not. Some of our data suggests there may be other universes, parallel universes.
Interviewer: What is an exoplanet?
Scientist: An exoplanet is a planet outside our solar system. ... NASA actually now has honest to goodness real data on what the weather is like on some of these planets. In a real way we're becoming the first sort of interplanetary weather forecasters.
Interviewer: And finally, "BattleStar Galactica" or "Star Trek"? Scientist: Or lord, how can you decide between those two? I did get addicted to "BattleStar Galactica," but I have to say I'm a Trekkie by heart. I've been a "Star Trek" fan all my life.
