Good morning pupils! I’m glad to see you at our lesson. I want to announce that we are going to speak about family relations today. I want you to accumulate a better vision of the subject that seems to be so trivial at first sight. Really, what can be said about a family? But we are to remember that it is a very complicated phenomenon. It’s worth investigating and that is what we are going to do today.

Warm-up:

• What is the word “family” associated to you with and why?

• How many members do you have in your family? Name them.

• Describe in a few sentences the relationships in your family.

• Do you get on well with all the members of your family?

1. Читання інтерв’ю.

2. Виконання вправ після прочитаного.

Мета: закріпити розуміння змісту тексту

Прийом: самостійне виконання, перевірка результатів шляхом «ланцюжку»: P1-P2-P3…

At first let’s look at today’s active vocabulary. Word list (Appendix 1).

Pre-reading tasks

There are a lot of kinds of families all over the world nowadays. You are going to read five interviews about different teenagers’ families.

How do you understand the title of the text “It takes all sorts…!”

Read the interviews by yourselves (Laser B1+, page 6-7)

Post-reading tasks

Now you are ready to do the exercises after reading and make sure that you have got all the information correctly (Laser B1+, page 7, exercises 2, 3,4).

Ex. 2 Key: 1-F, 2-F, 3-T, 4-F, 5-F.

Ex. 3 Key: 1-3 – C,D,E; 4-5 – A,B; 6 – C; 7 – E; 8 – B; 9 – D; 10 – A.

Ex. 4. Key: 1 only child, 2 spoilt, 3 divorced, 4 remarried, 5 stepsister, 6 loving, 7 adopted, 8 half brother.

Pre-listening task

Before you listen, read the questions and talk about what each person might say in these situations.

While listening the task

Listen to the interviews attentively and check your predictions if they coincide with the correct ones (Laser B1+, page 10, ex. 2).

Post-listening tasks

Work in groups of four, answer and discuss the following questions:

1. Why was John punished by his father?

2. What profession is the woman from the interview № 2 engaged in?

3. What happened with the boy from the interview № 3?

4. Why is the girl from the interview № 4 upset?

5. What party is spoken about in the interview №5?

Мета: вдосконалити навички логічного мовлення

Прийом: самостійне виконання вправ

Use the new learnt vocabulary to complete the sentences using the words in the bow (Appendix 2) and read the text and decide which answer (A, B, C or D) best fits each gap (Appendix 3).

Ad.2 Key: 1 spoilt, 2 adopted, 3 only child, 4 half brother, 5 remarried, 6 divorced, 7 loving, 8 stepsister.

Ad.3 Key: 1 B, 2 A, 3 B, 4 D, 5 C, 6 C, 7 D, 8 A, 9 B, 10 C.

Now you’ve realized that every family consists of different people and personalities. To get on well with all the characters of your family, to help your parents about the house, to have your own duties either at school or at home, respect the wishes of the others, to understand the other’s problems and so on make you develop your own personality. Your family is the most precious thing in your life.

So, let’s check your answers reading one by one. Everybody should listen to each other and correct the mistakes if there is any.

7. Складання діалогів на основі ідіоматичних виразів.

Мета: розвивати навички діалогічного спілкування

Прийом: робота в групі

When people want their speech to be interesting, colorful, bright and exciting they often try to use the idioms. Very often the idiomatic phrases can’t be translated and understood as the translation of the separate words of the expression. More often they have unpredictable meaning. I’ve found some idioms related with our today topic and at first I want you to match them with their definitions and to guess what each of them may mean.

1. the apple of one’s eye;

2. to share joys and sorrows;

3. to come of good kin;

4. next of kin;

5. smb’s nearest and dearest;

6. Mr Right;

7. a black sheep;

8. a skeleton in the family cupboard;

9. a bed of roses.

1. pleasure and fun;

2. an ideal man;

3. a relative;

4. some unpleasant mystery (secret);

5. the dearest person;

6. members of the family and close people;

7. to be born in a good friendly family;

8. a person who is in the centre of conflicts;

9. to exchange happy and unhappy moments (Appendix 4).

8. Узагальненні вивченого матеріалу.

Мета: активізувати вживання лексики з теми

Прийом: робота в парі

Imagine the situation that you are at your cousin’s home watching the family photo album. Make up your own dialogue using the idioms above. Work in pairs.

Dialogue 1:

• Oh Jane, look at this funny picture! Here are all our nearest and dearest.

• Right you are! But unfortunately we can seldom see each other to share joys and sorrows all together.

Dialogue 2:

• Oh, how good of you to collect our pictures in one album. It’s a priceless material for our family.

• You know, I like either take photos or keep them. You can find here even Tom who is the apple of Sue’s eye…

• … and Jull, a black sheep among our relatives.

Прийом: розповідь вчителя

Everybody of us should understand the importance of getting on well with the members of the family, because they are the closest people who love you, care about you and help you with different problems you have. It’s important to remember that any person needs not only be cared of but to treat his/her nearest and dearest too.

Unfortunately, our lesson’s over but I hope that it was interesting and useful for you. Your job today may be describes as “Well-done”. The next lesson you should make your own story about your family relationships using as much new vocabulary as you can and read and translate the story “Three generations under the same roof” (Appendix 5) and think over the next questions:

• What conflicts occur in your family?

• How do you understand the term: the generation gap?

• Do you think that it is a good idea to live with both parents and grandparents?

• What role do your grandparents play in our family?
