3.7 - Certificate of Fitness
All ships are built and equipped in accordance with the Code;
The ship design will incorporate various degrees of cargo segregation, protection, stability, survivability and cargo handling/monitoring features;
3.7 - Certificate of Fitness
Depending on this design the ship are classed as a Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3 Chemical Tanker and this will determine the range of chemicals it can carry under Chapter 17 of the Code;
After satisfactory initial survey it will be issued with a COF (Certificate of Fitness) with attached list of cargoes permitted to carry;
3.7 - Certificate of Fitness
An International Certificate of Fitness for the carriage of Dangerous Chemicals in Bulk is issued by the Flag State after a satisfactory initial or a periodical survey to a chemical tanker engaged in international voyages which complies with the relevant requirements of the Code.

It should be issued for a period specified by the administration which should not exceed 5 years from the date of the initial survey or the periodical survey.
No extension of the 5 year period of the certificate should be permitted. COF should be endorsed by Class during annual surveys.
