•Recognizing the potentially disastrous impact of a chemical spill into the sea, the IMO evaluated and categorized some 250 substances and established detailed operational standards and procedures. Guidelines for responding to chemical accidents were also drafted.

•The Objective of Annex II of the MARPOL Convention is to prevent operational pollution by noxious liquid substances in bulk by providing ships with detailed operational standards and procedures.

•Entered into force on 1st January 2007 and is applicable to new and existing ships.
•New pollution categorization system.
•Stricter stripping requirements for new ships.
•New ship type requirements for re-categorized cargoes.
•Simplification of requirements and procedures.
•No Annex II cargo may be carried unless categorized and assessed.
•Re-categorization required for all products.
