LONDON

London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic, commercial and cultural centre. It is one of the biggest and busiest ports of Great Britain. It is situated on both sides of the river Thames which is navigable all the year round.

London stretches for nearly thirty miles from east to west and for nearly thirty miles from north to south. More than nine million people live in London and its suburbs.

London consists of many parts which are different from each other. The main of them are: the City, Westminster, the West End and East End.

The City is small in area, but it is the commercial heart of London with many banks and offices situated there. It is the oldest part of the town with the Tower of London that comes first among the historic buildings of the city. The Tower of London was founded by Julius Caesar and in 1066 rebuilt by William the Conqueror. It was used as a fortress, a palace and a prison. Now it is a museum of Armour.

A twenty minutes walk from the Tower will take you to another historical building -St. Paul's Cathedral, the greatest of English churches. It was built by a famous English architect Sir Christopher Wren. It took him 35 years to plan and build the cathedral. St. Paul's Cathedral with its huge dome and rows of columns is considered to be a fine specimen of Renaissance architecture. Nelson and other great men of England are buried in the Cathedral.

Not far away is another important part of London – Westminster, where most of the Government buildings are situated. Here the tourists can see Westminster Abbey. Many outstanding English statesmen, painters and poets, Newton, Darwin and Tennyson among them, are buried there.

Across the road from Westminster Abbey is Westminster Palace, the seat of the British Parliament. Two graceful towers of the Houses of Parliament stand high above the city. The higher of the two contains the largest clock in the country and the famous bell Big Ben that strikes every quarter of an hour.

The West End of London is a symbol of wealth and luxury. The best and the most expensive hotels, restaurants, clubs, theatres, cinemas and the richest shops are situated there. There are splendid houses and lovely gardens of the wealthy classes there.

Лондон является столицей Великобритании, ее политических, экономических, торговых и культурных центров. Это один из крупнейших и самых оживленных портов Великобритании. Он расположен на обеих сторонах реки Темзы, которая судоходна круглый год. Лондон расположен почти на тридцать миль с Востока на Запад и почти на тридцать миль с Севера на Юг. Более девяти миллионов человек живут в Лондоне и его пригороде. Лондон состоит из многих частей, которые отличаются друг от друга. Основными из них являются: города Вестминстер, Уэст Энд и Ист Энд. Город мал в размерах, но это коммерческое сердце Лондона с множеством банков и офисов, расположенных в нем. Это самая старая часть города с Лондонским Тауэром, которая приходит первой среди исторических зданий города. Лондонский Тауэр была основана Юлием Цезарем и в 1066 году перестроен Вильемом Завоевателем. Он использовался как крепость, дворец и тюрьма. Теперь это музей Брони. A в 20 минутах ходьбы от башни будет принимать вас в другое историческое здание - собор Святого Паул, самый большой из английских церквей. Он был построен знаменитым английским архитектором Кристофером Рен. Ему понадобилось 35 лет что бы спланировать и построить собор. Собор Святого Паул с его огромным куполом и рядами колонн считается прекрасным образцом архитектуры эпохи Возрождения. Нельсон и другие великие люди Англии похоронены в соборе. Не далеко есть еще одна важная часть Лондона – Вестминстер, где расположено большинство правительственных зданий. Здесь туристы могут увидеть Вестминстерское аббатство. Там похоронены многие выдающиеся английские государственные деятели, художники и поэты, Ньютон, Дарвин и Теннисон. Через дорогу от Вестминстерского аббатства — Вестминстерский дворец, место пребывания британского парламента. Две изящные башни здания парламента стоят высоко над городом. Выше двух башен только крупнейшие часы в стране и знаменитый колокол Биг-Бен, который поражает каждую четверть часа. Уэст-Энд Лондона является символом богатства и роскоши. Здесь расположены лучшие и самые дорогие отели, рестораны, клубы, театры, кинотеатры и богатые магазины. Есть великолепные дома и прекрасные сады богатых классов.
