Tell Pp to read the instruction, put them to pairs and let them practise. Pp say in turn where to look. Set about three minutes for this activity.
Suggestion:
For more practise on direction adverbials you might want to play Look, there’s… . Put several pictures of London sights on the walls (on the left, on the right, straight ahead, behind). Ask four or five Pp stand in a line. The first P is a tour guide. When the tour guide says: on the left, on the right, straight ahead, behind us, the other Pp point in the right direction and say, Look there’s… E.g. the tour guide says, Straight ahead is Trafalgar Square. Pp point straight ahead and say, Look there’s Trafalgar Square staright a head.
4A Class. To raise Pp’s awareness of the different forms of superlatives.
Draw Pp’s attention to the photo of the diamond. Ask if there are many diamonds in the world and if they are big. Ask Pp to read the text and say what it is special about the diamond in the photo.
Refer Pp to Ex. 4a. Let them work in pairs for two or three minutes and elicit the answers.
Answer key:
Big, old, large are short. Famous, popular are long.
We use –est with short words?
We use most with long words?
They all need the article the?
4B Individual / Pairs, class. To practise the superlative forms of and adjectives.
Show the picture of the London Eye and tell Pp briefly about it.
Pp read the text and fill in the gaps with the superlative forms of the adjectives.
Answer key: 1) the newest 2) the most popular 3) the tallest 4) the most wonderful 5) the most famous 6) largest 7) exciting
Suggestion:
To have more practice of the superlative forms you migth want to use one of the following activities.
The Top Ten Game. Write a list of countries, cities or buildings on the left side of the blackboard and ten adjectives from your Pp’s active vocabulary on the right. Pp say twenty sentences, two about each country, city or buildingusing the superlative forms of these adjectives, e.g.: I think Moscow is the most beaujtiful city. I don’t think Moscow is the biggest city.
A domino quiz. Write/ Print out A4 sheets of paper each of these cards.
Mount Everest |
(high) mountain |
Great Wall |
(long) wall |
The Sahara |
( large) desert |
The CN Tower |
( tall) tower |
… |
|
Put the cards on the blackboard and ask a P to take any of them. The other Pp are to choose a matching sheet / card and join these two pieces of information into a meaningful sentence, e.g. Mount Everest is the highest mountain.
Guinness Book of Records. Elicit some records that pupils know about. E.g.:C heetah is the fasted land animal.
5A Class. To practise talking about sights.
Hand out / Put on the walls the images of a few well-known sights in your area. Put Pp in pairs and encourage them to take turns to act out tour guides. Allow about four minutes for this practise.
Invite two or three pairs to perform in front of the class. In a stronger class you might want to choose partners for the class performance at random.
